Horse getting rubbs from blanket
So my horse is getting rubbed by his blanket but it is not in his shoulders where a sleezy can help. It is on his left hip bone. How do I stop this, I put Aloe on it tonight and let it dry . But otherwise what do I do?
Have you checked the inside of his rug? Maybe fabric has gone a bit funny. I had a rug do that once, I ended up stitching a soft piece of furry material to the underside so it was soft against his skin.
Yeah, I would have said the exact same thing as meggymoo. But even if you can't see anything odd about the underside of the fabric, there's no harm in sewing a patch of fleece or some sort of soft or wooly material in the spot where it rubs him. I'm pretty sure you can get special lotions to help the fur grow back quicker, but the coat normally grows back fine by itself.
Meggymoo, Connemara ya, lol I thought that at first too but the blanket is the same. I have been keeping the inside wiped and clean. At first I thought maybe another horse tried to bite him, but the outside doesn't have a mark. When I took the blanket off I noticed right away that the hair was going in the wrong direction and as I was brushing the hair back down He got a little ouchy back there so I took a closer look and could see after spreading the hairs the were sticking up, some pink slightly irritated skin. That is when I put the Aloe on it.
Thats strange, definatley sounds like its causing some kind of friction. :?
I'd try stitching a softer piece of material, just to see if it works. No harm in trying.
Can you just not use a blanket?
No Joshie unfortunatly, this is the 1st time I have had to use one but it is because at the end of Sept. we moved barns, he started losing a little weight and by mid Oct we were getting cold, windy rainy days. We live in MN, and my new barn owner called me saying he was shivering. Well now yes he is more at ease with the place and is maintaning his weight but he has been blanketed and today it was -1 with the wind chill. He stays out 24/7 and does have shelter, but the 3 younger bigger boys don't let the 3 older ones in.
So in other words he has been blanketed and now I have to keep them on.
I just got a fleece blanket liner from my mom today, I will put it under his blanket and see if it helps. Thanks guys!!
Here in IL it's in the mid-teens with a wind chill of 6 during the day. We don't blanket here. We have shelter available but the silly horses don't use it at all. Our boy is chubby. We had a nutritionist out this fall and she wanted Joshua to get a bit chubby before it got cold. I don't have to worry about Joshua getting this but we don't blanket here at all.
Ya, I have never blanketed him before this either, and he had been on Pasture 24/7 at that time also. But with the new place unfortunatly he just needed it. I am hoping that next year he will not but atleast now I have them just incase. Ugh I hate winter, can't wait till spring time!!!
