Mini donkey pregnant...stall question
My donkeys are in a large shaded dry lot and their pen is a metal storage building with a roof and it is sitting on dirt, a good size for my 2 donkeys....normally just the dirt in the stall is good as they like to take dirt baths, and I can sprinkle Pdz on the urine, they do have one spot they always pee on....
I have now put down straw for the flooring since she is 9 months along....what a mess...she is peeing all over it and it is really hard now for me to get the poop up...I am wondering if Cedar shavings would be ok...I have heard that regular stall shavings may suffocate the baby.....I would put down black plastic first then a thick layer of shavings....any suggestions would be greatly appreciated....I really feel like she will have the baby in there....
Save yourself a lot of work and start laying down good clean straw when she gets closer to having her baby. A miniature donkey gestation is between 11.5 to 13 months. You will be cleaning bedding for several unneeded months if you start now.
Oh, almost forgot... Pictures please :D
Miniature donkeys are adorable
You cannot predict where she will foal. Most likely it will be as far away from the other donkey as possible. If she is urinating in the shed I dont think she will foal in it.
I agree that it is too early to start getting the stall ready for the foal. Just relax you will have plenty of work to do when it is due.
My mares foal in pastures and always in a pretty clean spot. Away form the other horses.
EXCEPT for two of the mares this year. They foaled at the same time and about 25 feet apart. The foals were 20 minutes apart.
Don't use cedar shavings! Fir or other material approved for horse bedding is good but not cedar.
Straw is good for foaling material but wait until she is due...as SunnyDraco said, save yourself work ...and money.
Mini donkeys are so cute!
I was wondering about that...she was either bred in July or August we think...he was cut September 1.....with the cedar chips...I am afraid they will eat them as they love bark on trees....
For now. I think I will get it dried out with Pdz and wait til closer to time...I will post pics when the new one arrives and will probably be on here asking more questions....
Our school uses shavings and then when the mare is close, put straw on top. That way the foal will be out of the shavings but they will still be good for soaking up urine.
