Peggy are the percentage numbers after the names the amount of nsc in each feed? |
Yes they are so if you have 25% NSC in a feed that is .25lbs per lb so if you are feeding say 6lbs (that is min on most feeds) you are feeding 1 1/2 lbs of sugars and starches in your "hard feed" or grain product ... |
i'll never understand why all the senior feeds are some of the biggest "junk" foods when that group is most at risk for IR, Cushings and Founder. Peggy maybe you should also list the NSC of plain grains...Ive heard straight corn is upwards of 75%? |
OK but it will take me a bit ... I will go pull the latest numbers off of Dairyone or equinalytic(sp) |
The following numbers are all from here http://www.equi-analytical.com/Commo...GetResults.asp Shelled Corn 68% to 77% NSC Oats 43% to 61% Barley 51% to 67% Beet Pulp 3% to 19% Corn Glutten 15% to 30% Distillers Dried Grains 3% to 17% Soybean Meal 12% to 17% ALfalfa pellets 6% to 13% Alfalfa cubes 7% to 12% Grass hay 8% to 17% Alfalfa HAY 8% to 13% Grass pasture 6% to 20% I think I got most of them ifyou wanna know anything else just ask and I can TRY to find it LOL |
fantastic Peggy! You do so much work for the rest of us. I copied and pasted this and am printing it off for my "horse files" :D |
What is the daily requirements for an average sized adult horse not under training but ridden regularly? Or do they not need any? |
Quote:
Most horses meet the daily requirements of glusose needed with hay and/or pasture there really is no NEED to supplement the sugars and starches UNLESS you have a racehorse or a horse in HEAVY HEAVY training... |
Thanks, thats what I wanted to know. Great information, thanks for sharing :D |
