I would like to start lunging outlaw but i never lunged before.
I'm sure you'll get lots of advise on how to start this. Here's some info.
How to Lunge a Horse - wikiHow
I would really suggest you look on youtube and see if there are video's. Lunging is an art form and bad lunging habits can easily confuse the horse. The most common mistake I see is that people will continually look at the horses head instead of at his barrel. I would also suggest having someone who is experienced at lunging give you a couple of lessons.
yes please please please have someone teach you ...
i kinda know how to a little i lunged once the hose i lunged was old and just walked. the thing i need is more how to get them to lope and trot.
Yeah, I would definitely get someone to teach you. It's much better to learn that way, then online. A couple things to keep in mind though:
- Lunging does not subsitute for regular riding exercise and should be used only as an aid in training; so don't over lunge (I say this just as a precaution, because I personally think lunging is a great groundwork tool).
- Make sure the circle is big enough (20 metres is about normal). Lunging can be hard on the horse's joints if the circle is too small.
Ooh one more. Sorry ...
- If you can get away with not using a lunge whip, then do it.
Good luck! Lunging is really fun. I'm sure you will enjoy it. :-)
I am going to have a friend teach me how to lunge because I have a horse that needs more basic groundwork training and respect. I don't think my horse knows how to lunge or I'm just really bad at it. So, I am going to my experienced trainer friend for some help. She is going to demonstrate on a horse that lunges well, then guide me through it. Then she will do the same with another horse that is learning. She will also start my horse for me and the end goal is for me to work with my own horse.
Now, does that cover all the bases? Does anyone have any tips beyond that? I have read a few things on it, but reading just isn't doing it for me. I think I will do better once I have a visual perspective on it.
