Background: Gracie is an AQHA Buckskin mare, 3 years old and is cared for and ridden by my younger sister. I live 2 1/2 hours away from home and don't have a place to keep her where I currently live. My little (college freshman) sister loves Gracie to death and is alway very alert on how Gracie is feeling or doing.
I got a call on this very cold afternoon from my sister saying that Gracie is lame:evil:. She described it in the following way: right front leg, no weigh being put on the leg, swelling in the knee, and not broken. Well, from experience we have delt with abseced hooves, stress fractured shins, stone bruises, and etc.
I will report that Gracie has been seen to this afternoon and has been given medications to help her heal. Gracie will also be watched closely (because little sister, mom, and dad all love Gracie dearly) and treated over the next couple of days.
My only concern  is what may have caused this. I am looking for suggestions.
Thanks and Merry Christmas
My experience with our young ones has been that they sprain knees or fetlocks when they are playing/'horsing around' and are not watching their footing (mud/roots/rocks/holes/etc). Just went through a couple sprained fetlocks in our 4 and 6 yr olds within the last month due to crazy playing in a leave covered, muddy area.
