So recently i decided to start riding my barrel horse in a traditonal hackmore to get him back to the basics and a better feel shocking he is alot better in a hack then in his bit just curious what other peoples tack on riding an older bit horse in a hack and if anyone s done the same
Well, because of pressure points hackamores can be a whole lot more severe than bits, which may be why he is responding so well.
Well i introuduced the english hackamore to 1 of my horses when he was about....... 18yrs old after being bitted his whole life..... was a very easy transition for him , and now being about 21 hes still going well in it.
My other horse however didnt really like the english hack, it was a bit to much for him. I tried it on him at about age 19-20yrs old after also being bitted his whole life. He had teeth problems at the time so needed a bitless type of bridle. I ended up getting a cross over bitless which works well for him, so i never went back to a bitted bridle.
The one thing i do caution greatly when choosing a hackamore, is its severety, in particular in a situation if your horse gets a fright. As its the riders natural reaction to ' snatch ' back on the reins, creating a quick jerking motion. In a severe hackamore this action could very well cause alot of damage without you intending it to, altho that is more related to mechanical hackamores. Not so much bosals, crossovers or ropehalter types.
What made you want to try out a hack? if i may ask.........
thanks i m still learning but it must be hitting the right points that are easier for him the where his bit sits cause we seem to be getting farther in his training and hes alot more relaxed but hes been as oppisite of my other horse as they come... so my tack collection just keeps growing
I normally don't condone using mechanical hackamores because they can be VERY harsh but since he is a barrel horse, I am assuming he is pushy and maybe a little hard-mouthed. If it works for you and he does well in it, then that is great and I am happy for you. :) You don't have a real tack collection until you have at least 5 different items that do the same thing. LOL. You should see my tack room.
i got my 7yr old quarter horse at an auction (poor guy looked horrible i had to get him) and now hes the most wonderful boy a mother could have :) but he would not take a bit worth anything so now were on the hackamore and its wonderful he takes it like nothing. but id also like to see if theres something a little less harsh but has the same principal?
