Questions for people who have white or very light colored horses
I am seriously considering buying another horse. He is a few spot appaloosa that looks completely white (I know it is not really white) except for a few dime sized spots. The horse fits all the criteria I am looking for except for his color. He would have access to a run in shelter but would basically be turned out 24/7. Are white horses a nightmare to keep somewhat clean? I am thinking I would need to put a fly mask on him all summer to shade his eyes a bit from the sun.....I would think a fly sheet might keep him cleaner but it would make him a lot hotter wouldn't it? Would I need to worry about sunburn on his body? My dark colored horses clean up quickly and don't seem overly bothered by the flys but I have no experience with horses of this color.
A white horse is a white horse, it will get dirty. You will learn to live with it or groom a lot  but yes like you said he may need a fly mask depending on how white he is.
Here is my friends horse, hes white (well gray ) but you get the point, he doesn't get treated any differently than any other horse
. But he also has the dark skin under neither and isn't pink.
Where are some pictures of this horse?!
Is his muzzle mottled or pink? He may need sunscreen if his nose is pink.
Lots of white here. Think of it as owning a horse that is a different color everyday. Dazzling white, clay orange/red, grass green, dirty grey, or black.
Most bugs bother white horses less since they're attracted to dark colors.
Ours don't burn on their bodies, but get a big tube of zinc oxide (diaper rash creme) for the head.

white horse isnt gonna be any cleaner or dirtier than a brown horse. Hes just gonna "Look" dirtier. same amount of dirt will or wont be on them. You cant ride looks.
Here is my "grey" LOOKS white:lol: few spot...He is really not that hard at all to keep clean looking.
I just brush him daily~ He's had a bath since winter...Now if he gets dusty or dirty looking it just brushes off.
It gets real hot here in the summer time. Right now I just keep a fly mask on him and if needed sunblock in his nose.
We cant do a fly sheet it will be a waste of money with this guy. (He will tear it up)
Walter is not a clean horse. He always has poop stains on his hip/shoulder/side of head.
My horse stays completely filthy looking all winter, in the summer she stays looking (surprisingly) clean .. Until she sweats or gets wet- then the dirt pops out everywhere.
So far as sunburn... My horse doesn't have an issue on her back, but I know lots of horses with white faces (pink skin) are prone to sunburn and need sunscreen. My mare only has white n her nose, and if we are working all day without much access to shade I will go ahead and put some on, but SHE hasn't had an issue.
Some are worse than others, some need sunscreen applied daily. My horses are pastured 24/7 .. Is would suggest talking to the current owner.
I don't know if he has pink or black skin (I haven't gone to see him yet as he is about 6 hours away) Here are a couple pictures of him
I have a 50/50 paint, but his legs are all white. They tend to be the most discolored...he has a slough in his field and he seems to enjoy running through it at full speed. He rolls some, but I think he's a pretty clean horse. He does go out in a fly sheet with a neck thing, and during the fall, winter and spring he goes out in a turnout blanket, winter time with a neck thing.
His biggest issue is that his white legs (pink skin underneath) are susceptible to scratches, and he gets hosed off everyday when he comes in. Every spring he gets a bad case, even if I'm diligent and try to head it off.
I buy Mane and Tail shampoo and conditioner at Walgreens, KMart, etc, when it's on sale (like $3/bottle for big bottles), and save the Quik Silver for his legs a couple times a year.
