What kind of horse do I own?
what exact breed of horse is this other than a paint??? he trots and runs extremely smoothe
By the book, to be a Paint, he must be registered with the APHA, and there is no "other". If not a Paint, he could be a mix of breeds or from unregistered (grade) parents, and you would call him a Pinto (from his markings).

Nice solid looking boy. Could be a mix of anything really, but a at least one parent was pinto coloured.
either straight QH or a bit of pony of the americas in there. I know paint is recognized as a bree of it`s own but to get the paint it`s almost always QH. The obvious give aways with your boy is the low set neck, short powerful neck, short sturdy back, and that tell tale square bum. The most common way to pick a QH out from other breeds is the bum, they have a sharp point of hip and a clearly square shape where as warmbloods and tbs have the sloping, round quarters meant for getting underneath themselves to propel upwards for jumping, dressage, and racing.
Your horse's coloring is common with many different breeds. SOME of them are:
many Gaited Breeds
many pony breeds
Mixed breed horses
Breeding flashy color has been a big deal for a long time probably bc it's more interesting than a plain brown, or chestnut or bay.
As said above, the horse has to be registered to be a "Paint."
IMHO, I don't buy for color. It's nice when it comes as an accessory, though.
