Virus from HF?
Is it possible to get a virus through the HF? I don't know much about this stuff. I am NEVER on any funky sites, just here, myspace, ebay, and my bank stuff. I don't open weird emails or anything. After wiping the pc, another trojan virus showed up today, but with a different name. i know it's possible we didn't get rid of it all the way, but is it not possible to get one through here? Sorry I'm a bit ignorant about this stuff. I am getting virus protection in the next day or so. Please if you know anything let me know.

Myspace is one of the places I would NOT trust. Ebay is OK but there has been troubles. Your bank sites should be ok.

I haven't had any problems. I keep all my virus, spyware and any other anti-nasty stuff up to date. I'll run my antivirus again and let you know if I come up with anything.

A forum like this shouldn't be giving you any viruses, and I'm sure Mike is an honest guy who doesn't want to infect us all with nasty trojans.

I use AVG Free Edition. It doesn't cost anything and it has served me and many others well. Get it today :)

ya myspace i thought about that, but my profile is set to private, i don't download codes, and i only have close friends and family on there....barely have any friends. i originally got the virus from limewire (stupid me), as you prob remember i posted about viruses about a week ago or so, then it spread to all 3 pc's. Then the BF wiped em, now he's trying to say that is it possible i got it from here because im on so much. grrrrrr

myspace *shudder*

You often get them from the type of websites with flashy pop ups and stuff and from downloading. Never open attachments from people you don't know! I actually don't open any attachment I am not expecting until I confirm from the sender that they meant to send it.

Are you using Internet Explorer as your browser? I know there was a big to do a week or so ago about some problems they were having and a patch that everyone needed to download. I just switched to Google Chrome to be on the safe side. There was an article about it on MSNBC if I find it I'll post it.

Here it is
I've heard about this on other sites so its not just some made up story.

Thanks for the vote of confidence, Claire. :-)

You definitely should not have gotten a virus from here, free_sprtd. You mentioned you got a virus a week ago from limewire. Do you know the name of the virus you had? If you tell me I can find out more about it for you.

I'll bet it's the same one rearing its ugly head again. Sometimes these things embed themselves very deep into your operating system. When you say your boyfriend wiped the pc, did he format the entire hard drive to remove every last file and reinstall windows? If not, it's possible that the virus was still there - dormant and waiting.

There was recently a virus that exploited a vulnerability in Internet Explorer that swept the entire Internet. Do you use Internet Explorer? Have you installed any patches or anything Microsoft may have released to deal with the issue? Your operating system may have downloaded and applied any necessary patches automatically. I would look into it, though.

I would definitely install at least a free antivirus program like the one Claire suggested, though I haven't tried that one personally.
