Swollen cannon ( I think that is the name)
Ok so long story short ( as I hyperventalate again) The spot between the knee and fetlock on the inside of his front left leg is swollen along with his knee. I called the vet and they said to cold soak, give bute and wrap both legs. My vet is coming out tomorrow to doo either an ultra sound or x-rays. The pastures are glare ice and he was limping while on the hard stuff but walks fine on soft stuff!! It is not a bowed tendon, my barn owner/trainer looked at it, and wrapped it for me because I have never wrapped a leg before. I am so worried!!!
And I feel awful because when I pulled him in and he was fine on the soft ground I first just assumed he was ouchy from the hard ground. So I took him to the arena and lunged him. On the first side (going to the right he was fine at all gaits, then I switched to the left and I could tell he was off at the trot so I asked him to canter and that is when I knew something was wrong!! So I took him back in the barn and with 3 of us looking and feeling around I finnally saw it!!(or felt it more like) Did I do more damage lungeing him? I feel like the most awful mom!!! Is this just a sprain? How long do you think he will be out of work? Is this gonna cost me my house in vet bills?
The place I keep him at has no stalls so he has to be kept outside, should I move him because the place is just not set up to take care of my baby?
UGH!!!! Sorry so long.. cookies to all that have read this!!!
Don't panic. I doubt you did any serious harm to him by lungeing. Your vet is coming out soon, and you have been paying attention already. It may just be a sprain, but you are good to have the vet come out. As for no stalls, that's a good thing. Stall rest will likely only make it worse. Allow him to move as much as he likes, but see if you can't find some ground that isn't slippery for him. If ice is the only choice, it's not a good one. Then you need to look HARD for some other options.
I agree with Northernmama, no need to panic. It's probably something minor, he'll get better. Just think of it as a learning experience. Horses hurt themselves and we learn how to fix them. I'm sure he'll be fine in no time.
Don't worry. I'm sure that he will be fine in no time. He could have sprained his knee on the ice or maybe fractured a splint (a minor thing). Don't get too excited until the vet comes out. If he is walking on it, then it is probably not too serious. I don't think you did any more damage by lunging him. If your knee hurt and someone asked you to jog around, wouldn't you stop before it hurt too much? Horses do the same thing.
OK so I am back with the news, sorry it's been so long, but I was at the barn so often the 2 days after this happened and then the site was down.
So the vet found a small scrape under his knee so we are guessing this is the spot of impact when he slipped on the ice. She put a sweat on it using DMSO and Furt. wrapped in plastic and we wrapped both legs in thin pillow and polo wraps. Gave him Bute and put him in a flat pastures with the 2 ponies.
The swelling had completely gone away by the next day, so I cold soaked and left it unwrapped but still left him with the ponies. (he is not happy being in with them because he does not get free choice hay). Well then I go out on Fri. and it is swollen again. I cold soaked it again and went out this morning cold soaked again and gave him some Bute, took him in the indoor and let him go to roll, and off he went running and bucking!!! lol and lots of farting!! 1 of my vets also boards at my barn and she came out while we were there and she had me hand trot him and saw no sign of lameness (yay) but on hard ground he is still sore and he is still swollen. So I will be back out there tomorrow to cold soak him again. Thanks for all the support guys, it was nice to hear I wasn't a horrid horsey momma!!
And it didn't break the bank, atleast not yet!! lol
Happy New Year!! This was a great start!!lol
Glad to hear it's working out. Sounds like you are on top of it.
Thanks Northern, I just hope he gets feeling better soon.
