Stone bruise, help!
So i am 99% sure that my mare has a stone bruise. I had her looked at and that is what I am told. This happened last Sunday (the 21st) and i have kept her in her stall at night but let her out in the pasture in the day.
After i get off work i will go out to check on her and lounge her to see how she is doing. For the first 10 min. she looks great but then she starts to limp again. **When i am lounging her i am just letting her move so i can see her, im not making her do anything.**
I gave her bute last night and am hoping that she will be feeling better today, anyone have any other ideas of what i should do? The BO said not to let her out in the round pen but to ride her around so that she can't buck and act all crazy ... that way she can heal better ...
Sounds like there might be a little more to it then just being a stone bruise. Is it possible to post photos? If it is a stone bruise you can always soak her in epson salts. It will help draw out some of the bruising.
id post pics but there is nothing to see... (you can't see a stone bruise, you can tell it's there by putting small amounts of pressure on their frog area and seeing if they are sensitive)
Let her out, don't ride for a few days if she's limping on a line. A epsom soak for a few days might make her feel better. Stone bruises usually feel better in a couple of days. If it goes on longer it could be an abcess.
My old mare used to get stone bruises all the time and a couple days of soaking in epsom salt helped. Also you can try a poultice with whats called Icthamol in it, its pine tar and its gross but it really helps for stone bruises and abcesses.
sweet thanks! i knew you guys would help :)
i have tomorrow off work so i plan to do whatever i can tomorrow cause ill have LOTS of time!
is she shod?
yep ... all 4 feet
You can wrap the hoof with poulotouse and soak it
ok guys i have put on a poultice (like i said i would) and have been walking her all kinds as well as letting her out in the small pasture ... I tried to ride her Sat. but she was still a little ouchy and WAY crazy lol so i thought we would pass on that since she is hurting her foot more by being a spaz... i think that it might be an absess tho since it is persisting this long...
After the abscess comes out, does anyone have any recommendations for what to put on it to help it heal fast?
