My wife and I just purchased a 7mo filly. She has white eyes, pupil is black ofcourse and doesnt seem to be cloudy. We have talked to a few people and when we mentioned how cool her eyes were, their reaction was, "she may go blind." Is it really as common as they make it seem? Thanks for your help
I have heard that because they don't have the dark pigment - iris, that their eyes absorb much more of the harmful rays of the sun, thus causing blindness. Blue eyed horses also have some trouble with this.
A friend was told to get some eyeliner and put it around their eyes, or have the area tattooed. Also, you might want to keep a fly mask on esp. in the bright sun, it helps some. Somewhere I saw horse sunglasses for sale, but I can't remember where... :( You might try googling equine or horse sunglasses, or something?
Sorry, I'm not much help.
well i have a blue eyed horse with no make up around the eyes. a pain in the patootie. I have definitley heard i could have the area around his eyes tattooed but no matter what people tell me, i just can't have Tom the Tattoo guy messing with his eyes. But i have heard that it does work for a few years before you have to redo it.
My guy wears his fly mask A LOT (to protect his eyes from wind, sun, etc) have to change masks a lot to stop them from rubbing him. He wears suntan protection around his eyes sometimes, a little on his nose. He actually seems to like it! He has gotten a little burned a few times when the barn he was at didn't mask him and he really liked the lotion i put on the area to soothe him.
I had a horse eye specialist look at him twice and that was money very well spent. I would suggest that as a way to get a good maintainence plan.
hadn't heard about the sunglasses, what a great idea! I have heard of sunglasses for dogs who put their heads out of car windows called "doggles"!
my sisters pony has a blue eye, it was checked out by a vet and the vision was crystal clear! :D
