Where can I get rope to make rope halters?
So, I've decided that I want to try and make some of my own rope halters and whatnot. The thing is, I can't find where to find affordable rope!
You need about 20 feet of rope to make a halter (for a normal sized horse). everywhere I've looked for nylon/yacht rope is very expensive - to the point that, for the 20 feet of rope, it'd cost me way more to make it than it would just to buy one already made. I got mine, a basic but well constructed warmblood sized 4 knotted rope halter, for 17 dollars (and the guy's got to be selling at some sort of profit.)
WHERE can I get rope this cheap?! I haven't found it for less than $1.20 a foot, and I am NOT going to essentially pay $20 to make a rope halter. This is getting frustrating.
Those of you who also make them, where do you get your rope from?
i buy 100 foot of 1/4 or 5/16" in different colors from Lowes or Home depot. seems like it's only $9
You could try hardware stores or agricultural stores. I'm in Canada and we have Home Depot, Peavey Mart (a scaled down version of the American Tractor Supply store, I think) and Canadian Tire - all of whom sell rope by the foot plus they also have bundled rope (you have to buy the whole, of course, but it's very reasonable on a per foot basis).
Thanks! I didn't even think to check in store, I just automatically went to the internet, as usually stuff is cheaper there. Silly me. I'll definitely have to check it out!
As a bonus, I realized I had a bit of rope, but not enough for a horse and DEFINITELY not enough for my horse. Next best thing? My dog!
He was not a happy camper, it took a good few minutes before he would sit (lay dejectedly) long enough for me to get his picture. Then he pawed it off his face and ran around like it was some giant game that he won. I realize the nose knots should have been a bit farther to the sides, not just at the top - but, it was a first try!
Aww, your puppy looks adorable with his halter though!
As the other members mentioned, hardware stores are probably your best bet. It will even be cheaper to buy in bulk if you really plan on making and selling the halters you make. :)
So, as it turns out, you're guys's Home Deopt and Lowes are WAY better than mine :(
I went to both today, and the cheapest I found by the foot rope was $48 for 100 feet. The bundles were a little bit better, but had no solid colors. (Also it was poly rope, not nylon. Does that matter?) There was some on the website that was more reasonable, but it only came in white.
buy the multi colored ploy, its soft easy to work with. It will fade eventually but good grief you can make 5 of them for $9.
You can learn to braid and make eye splices, a 100 foot will make you a rope halter and a leadline/ catch rope,
Amazon.com is your friend. That's where I get mine, I just ordered 2 50ft rolls of glow in the dark rope for 10 dollars. But you can get any kind you can imagine:)
