Facial Hair loss
My 23 year old quarter horse has started loosing her hair at the top of her forehead--just under where her mane falls--and right above her eyes. I had a vet look at it about 3 weeks ago and he said it didn't look bacterial or a fungus. He told me to put diluted Betadine on it, let it set for 5 minutes and then rinse for 2 weeks. I was very religious with the routine but it hasn't helped. It isn't getting any worse and doesn't seem to bother her in any way--she'll let me touch it and rub it and it's OK with her. It's basically just the asthetics of it. I spoke with some of the people at the stables and no one really had any advice but thought that someone out there may have had this and may have had some luck with something homeopathic.
I'll take some pictures later today and post them but will take any advice you may have!
Thanks for any help you can offer.
Poor baby. The first thing that comes to mind is ticks. Around the base of the forelock, or around her eyes. If not, then, maybe dry skin. I don't know what you feed, but BOSS (black oil sunflower seeds) are high in omega fatty acids and can help, as can canola oil or veg. oil. Um, maybe try some aloe vera cream. It's soothing.
After betadine, a home treatment for rain rot is 1/3 listerine (orig. flavor, ) 1/3 apple cider vinegar and 1/3 water. But if you use this on the face, be careful, the listerine is not good for eyes. And she may not be happy with the smell either...
You might also want to give her some extra B vitamins especially B12, as they can help boost her immune system. If she is fighting something, it gives her a little boost.
