Salmonella Outbreak Reported in 42 States
Health officials are investigating a salmonella outbreak that reportedly has sickened nearly 400 people in 42 states, but they do not yet know exactly how the bacteria has been spreading.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had not named all the states, but Ohio health officials have reported at least 50 people in 18 counties have been sickened by salmonella bacteria since October.
In Michigan, 20 people were reportedly sickened. The state's Department of Community Health said Wednesday that seven Michigan patients required hospitalization
Most people infected with salmonella develop diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps 12 to 72 hours after infection. The illness usually lasts four to seven days, and most people recover without treatment.
Officials said steps to protect against the illness include careful handling and preparation of raw meat and frequent hand washing.
What is this salmonella bacteria?
Oh God where do these people get the names from. It took me 20mins to pronounce the word and now my tongue is tired. haha :D
Hmmm... That's peculiar, I hope they can track down the source.
It wasn't me though. - the source I mean :D
You meant to say this :D
What is salmonella?
Salmonella is a type of bacteria. It is usually found in poultry, eggs, unprocessed milk and in meat and water. It may also be carried by pets like turtles and birds.
What kind of infection does salmonella cause?
The salmonella bacteria attacks the stomach and intestines. In more serious cases, the bacteria may enter the lymph tracts, which carry water and protein to the blood, and the blood itself. The bacteria attack all age groups and both sexes. Children, the elderly and people who are already ill are much more likely to get a serious infection.
What are the symptoms of salmonella poisoning?
A more severe infection may cause excessive diarrhoea, stomach cramps and general health problems. In such cases, treatment with antibiotics may be necessary and a doctor should be consulted.
When is it necessary to contact a doctor?
The only effective way to kill salmonella bacteria is with heat. For this reason it is essential to cook food thoroughly.

^^ looks like you have that google thing figured out
They used to sell little turtles in pet shops. It was very common to have a pet turtle when I was a kid. They found out they pass salmonella and stopped selling them. At least I think they stopped :? I loved pet turtles and never got sick from one :-(
No, they haven't stopped. You can still get turtles as pets.
There is one type of turtle I believe they stopped selling though because they typically ended up getting big and people would let them loose after they got too big and mess up the local eco-system.
However, I wonder if there is really an outbreak. The time-frame they are talking about falls right smack during the time that everyone starts preparing more turkey and such. Maybe people aren't fully cooking their poultry. Too many people look at the minutes & oven temp & color of the meat and don't actually track the temp inside the bird.
Aww that's nasty. If there is some overseas fodder or product which has contaminated its environment and then started to spread?
actually all reptiles carry salmonella, you're supposed to wash your hands before handling them (as to not spread anything harmful to them) and wash after handling.
RC! i love love love your avatar :)
