Tennessee Walking Horse industry faces uncertain future
ooh boo hoo, hope everyone of those cretins go bankrupt.
Well, small world. This place is about three miles from my house. I've driven past from time to time (it's not on any of my regular routes) and wondered what they did there as there were no signs. I guess that has now changed.
A lovely barn, however, does not cover up bad deeds done in that barn. The articles is correct in that action devices generally don't "sore" a horse under the rules of the HPA. They can, and frequently do, cause a horse to be sore in the veterinary sense. I note the author doesn't have the good sense to try for this distinction and the owner certainly was not going to help her out.
I'm not sure just what the purpose of the article was. It doesn't offer an appologia for the Big Lick horse but neither does it call out the process for its known issues.
"For some, the 3-inch-high horseshoes and accompanying ankle chains are the equipment of valuable athletes, harmless and necessary accoutrements...
For others, they represent cruelty, a stain on the breed, a reminder of the days when horses with open sores on their legs posed in the winner’s circle.
Middle ground is elusive."
You know, I'd like to make a comedy with people with scars on their faces walking by as cameos. The caption, "catch and release" human would scroll on the screen below.
Hope those rats (I would like to use a vulgerism here!) lose their businesses and their animals.
Ummmm ... good.
Im having a hard time understanding the article if someone would like to clear things up for me I would greatly appreciate it. LoL What I am reading is pretty much that they are "banning" the padded walkers? Sorry, I have a major headache and everytime I try to read the article I am skipping words and it isnt making a whole lot of sense.
I'm hopeful they can change. I don't see how given the people on the board. Still, I hope so and maybe they'll surprise me.
Toosexy, you should search for articles about TWH which show abuse, that have been posted here over the last several years. You'll want to cry when you witness the pain the suffering inflicted bc the "trainers" (more like inquisitioners) want to win$ in the show ring and get paid to inflict more pain on more TWH's.
IDK if you ride gaited but TWH's have a very comfortable natural running walk and smooth canter that they are born with. There is no need to use special shoes or equipment to enjoy the "Plantation Walker" gaits. The special shoes and equipement are ALL for the show ring and the bad practices have been ignored by authorities for WAY too long.
I say, "Hang 'Em High!!"
Synopsis: Some politicians want to make the stacked pads and ankle chains illegal.
Breeders and owners are claiming if you take those away they will lose millions and their horses will have no value.
The Big Lick horse is not so much "trained" as "made" or "manufactured." The gait is "nailed on," not achieved by work or breeding. Some horses take to it better than others, but that's not saying much.
The "Performace" industry maintains that the practices to create the Big Lick are not harmful to the horse if done correctly. IMO this is wrong. While the devices, themselves, might not be so harmful the movement created IS. Or maybe the movement would not be harmful if not caused by the devices. Frankly there's not a lot of reliable science, here.
In any event there's a lot of money on the table.
