I just bought a new horse. My first horse and she is trained to Drive. I have no knowledge on driving and would like to learn more. Any recommendations on this subject? Books, Authors, DVD's, Trainers I should look into. Any advice is appreciated! Thanks. Also, didn't buy her for that but since its something she can do I'd like to learn about it and possibly do it! She is currently used for trail riding and I am going to train her for Cowboy Mounted Shooting.
Just a little word of warning. I was told my pony was trained for driving and she was not nearly as trained as I thought. Also I did not have the knowledge and experience to recognize trouble before it happened and how to handle it when it did.
My biggest suggestion to all those new to driving: Start with an experienced horse and driver with you! It's like learning any other new equine sport, it's easier to learn the correct cues, commands, and other tidbits with someone there to tell you what/how to do it, and a horse that is going to give you the correct reaction when you finally do get the command right.
I started out with horse drawn carriages and drove with an experienced driver on the box with me for the first 30 or so drives. I've been driving for 7 years now, and am just now starting my first horse by myself.
Starting driving, be it new driver or new horse, is not for one person, you really must have someone else. Make friends with someone locally who drives and ask if you can go out with them and watch them drive, then drive their horse. And ask if that person can go out with you and work with your horse the first few times to make sure the horse is as well trained as you've been lead to believe. If your area hosts any CDEs (Combined Driving Events), go out there and watch, meet people, etc. CDEs take 2 people, that person hanging off the back is vital, and many drivers would gladly teach you to drive in exchange for you navigating for them.
look for local driving clubs. They can help you find a good mentor or trainer. best way to learn!
That is terrible I am sorry to hear that. She was trained for driving by the amish. The guy I bought her from actually used her for pulling a sled at his house just for pleasure. I actually know him so luckily I know its true. I am glad I got her from someone I know. I also have no knowledge and no experience but hopefully will get some. Thanks for the heads up. :D
That is actually a fantastic idea and I didn't even think of it!
I think I will look for a driving club as suggested by someone else. The only people I know personally are my Amish Black Smith and my Amish Leather guy! I would definately not just hook her up and try to go! LOL I like her to much for that. Thanks for the advice and I love the idea of going to watch CDE's I will also look into those. Thanks!
I don't know much about ohio, but if you are anywhere near Brecksville, google Maple Crest Farm. You can take lessons there, and Stacy and her mother Meredith are the MOST fantastic people.
Heck, Ohio is not THAT big, so even if you are not CLOSE, it would be worth it to look them up.
