Big John's First Rides

Okay, so I got to start my Percheron stud Big John this weekend. I caught him from the pasture and about 20 minutes later, I was riding around the pen. On the second ride, I took him to the country for a nice long trail ride and through town. On the third ride, I did all of that again and then rode him bareback for a while. I just wanted to share some pix because I am absolutely bursting with pride. It has been a very long time since I rode a draft and never one as big as him. He is a beautiful mover although his trot is impossible to sit because he is just tooo animated. I have to either post or stand in the saddle. Some of that will work itself out with more riding when he learns to relax and slow down some.

These are of his very first ride:

This is of the third ride just after coming back from the country.

This one kinda shows his size a little better. I can barely put my hand on his withers and I cannot touch the top of the crest of his neck unless his head is really down low.

I know that he looks a little swaybacked or downhill in this picture but he is not. It only looks that way because his neck is so big. He is still a stud and he is really fat too.

This is a pretty bad video, it was the first time to ride him bareback and I still had my spurs on so I was keeping my feet away from his side so I wouldn't gut-hook him and I nearly fell off because his trot is so hard to ride. He hasn't quite figured out all the mechanics of riding yet like giving to the bit the way I want and going in a straight line. I will try to get better video soon.

Looks really good! Don't you love how easily these guys take to being ridden? I laughed when you mentioned going in a straight line! My kids used to complain so much because Cody and I were veering allover the path, cutting them off all the time until he got it down :) How old is your stud? Cody's 4 1/2 and getting much more coordinated now. Big John is a beauty!!

Thank you both, he just turned 4 a couple of months ago. God forbid he ever have a mind to buck because I think he would destroy me. We were riding through town and a little kid darted out from behind a house on a bike. He nearly tore me in two when he jumped sideways away from it. LOL. My right leg is still sore but if that is the worst thing to ever happen to me, I'll be lucky. I really can't wait until he neck reins and is a little more responsive. I have to keep reminding myself that he is only 4 and has never been ridden before. His size keeps throwing me off and I expect him to know more than he does. Although, I will have to get a different saddle because I can't always have my Dad there to put the saddle on him. I am neither tall enough or strong enough for my heavy roping saddle.

Thank you all. Belgianlover, I hope your 2 are even half as easy as John. If they are, I think a kid could do it. LOL
