The term "Hand made"
This term is frequently bandied about to imply a custom saddle. To a degree all saddles out of the factory are hand made to a large extent, same as cars. Machines known as clickers cut out the leather so one person can likely cut out a particular piece of leather every 20 seconds. Like the auto industry there are those who work on specific parts and move it along. People become very proficient when doing assembly line work. So all saddles are hand made using whatever tools make the job go faster. Even junk saddles are hand made. When someone tells you a saddle is hand made, it is nothing to be impressed about, it's just how it's done. By producing saddles this way it reduces the factory cost to the wholesaler. NOW, a custom saddle, made by a saddle maker is all hand work. This means a machine doesn't cut the leather nor stamp the pattern into the leather, it is done by hand which takes many hours. How can you tell? Machine stamping will have a sharp imprint on the skirts and fenders yet barely an imprint on the forks because the leather has been pulled on to make it fit. With a custom saddle, the saddle is completed, then the forks are hand tooled and there will be nice definition.
