I'm Nervous... For the first time ever
I've been riding for 16 years now and I've always been pretty fearless on a horse. But about 4 month ago I hurt my back and I couldn't ride for 3 months, on Dec. 5 I had back surgery and have only just started riding again. But I everytime I ride, especially when I ride Amber (the 4y/o) I get really nervous, I just keep thinking about my back and what could happen if I fall. I'm really out of shape from not riding for so long. I dont know what to do, I dont want to be scared to ride, but I also never want to go through the kind of pain I went through when I hurt my back. Any advice?? Please!
Back in my early 20's, I'm now in my 50's, I came off and ended up in the hospital with a ruptured liver. 2 weeks in the hospital and 3 months at home.
How I got up the courage again was to take lessons. It gave me an extra measure of confidence having someone "tell" me what to do. Also, just having someone around really helped as well.
I started really slow, lots of walking, leg yields and changes in direction. I don't think I trotted for a couple of weeks. LOL. I did the same at the trot, honestly it took what seemed forever to canter, but by the time I did I felt my seat was really secure and I had a good feel for the horse.
I still get a bit nervous at the start of the riding season and have had hubby get on to start the first ride if I feel someone is full of themselves.
Go slow, don't beat yourself up, it's perfectly natural.
Soon enough you'll have some rides under your belt and wonder why you were feeling this way.
I am 17 years old and was thrown by a very spooky TB a little over a year ago. I cracked my hip and tore nerves in my leg. I still have no feeling in my right thigh. It took a good year to heal without riding. It killed me not to be able to get back on a horse, but when the time came, I was scared out of my wits. I didn't want to get on nervous because I knew it would make the horse nervous. My daddy knew that I loved riding and to help me back up in the saddle, he bought me an older 23 year old Paint gelding. The horse was a child's lesson horse and was a dream to ride. My dad hired an instructor to come out 3 times a week and work with me and Bandit. In no time I was riding Bandit by myself at the walk, trot, and canter. I have just gotten back into the swing of working cows as I did before. Maybe look around and find an older horse to start out with. It really helped me build my confidence back up!
I would say lunge your horses every time before you ride them just as an extra percaution. That way they will get some of the play out of there systems. I would also say to make sure someone is out with you while you are riding. Knowing someone is there will give you more security.
I agree with G and K's Mom. Lessons would probably help tremendously. I haven't had an injury as serious as yours, but I know that after I had my first major fall, I was scared too. Especially riding past the spot where I flew off. My instructor really helped to build confidence in me again.
Good luck! I'm sure you're a wonderful rider. Just take things slow. :-)
When I was about 14 I was thrown from a friends (we were riding double with me in the front) I dont know what happened but he went into a bucking rage my friend ended up pulling me off with her and I got stuck under the horse. I was kicked in the back and my calf got stepped on. I felt like my spirit was broken. I never thought something like that could happen, anyway to my point. I was scared to death to get back on my own horse. I taught my dad how to hold the lunge lunge and how to change directions, basically just to be there with me. I walked for what seemed like months before I would bring her up into a trot and then forever after into a canter. If someone with you makes you more comfortable then do that. Lessons would probably be great. It may take a little while but you can regain you confidence even if it wasnt a horse related injury.
