Dropping Outside Shoulder Around the Barrel
What do you do with a horse that drops their outside shoulder when going around the barrel and drifts wide?
My OTTB gelding is now at the point in his training where we are beginning to lope the barrel pattern. He's been trotting the pattern great, no issues with this shoulder thing. But every once in a while at the lope he will drop his right shoulder on the far side of the 2nd and 3rd barrel and drift wide. And it kind of feels like he's bracing with his left shoulder/neck at the same time.
Part of this issue may be due to his conformation (club foot, low shoulder on the right side), but he doesn't do this when doing spiral in/out drills or at the trot. And it's not every pattern.
I've been working with a trainer, but she's a little stumped on this one too.
Do you have a video you can show us?
It's kind of hard to help without a video of what's happening. Although from what it sounds like if your horse is dropping its shoulder to the OUTSIDE of a barrel before turning it I automatically think that the horse is popping into that OUTSIDE lead, which would make sense why the horse is drifting wide around the barrel. Just a though from how it was explained. I haven't encountered a lot of horses that actually drop the the outside of the barrels very often.
