Horse repeatedly bobbing head behind vertical while trotting?
Lately Navigator has gotten into a habit of bobbing his head behind the vertical while we trot. It just happens quickly, like a back and forth motion, but he doesnít pull the reins from my hands or anything. Just every couple of strides heíll do it, loose rein or on contact, especially after we transition down from canter.
Iíll check him for soreness tomorrow before we ride, but I donít think thatís itÖ Iíve never heard or seen this happening before, and I have no idea what to do. Usually I just push him forward with my seat and legs and that helps, but then heíll usually go back to it. :-/
Iíll try to get a video of it to post, since I donít feel like I was very clear.
Hes not lame is he? What kind of ground are you trotting on?
When I hear head-bobbing I think immediately of a TWH. TWH have to head-bob in order to have the correct gait they're supposed to perform. However it doesn't sound like your horse is gaited, since you said trot.
Exactly how much of a head-bob are you getting? Is it just a up and down shake or a full out bob; head, neck, and everything?
I don't think he's lame, at least, he's not showing any other signs of it...
I think it's more of a shake, but like I said before, I'm not sure I'm describing it 100% accurately since I've only felt it/seen him do it from his back. I have a friend coming to the barn with me today and she should be able to film for me, so if I get a video of it I will post it.
Here's a video from today of us trotting. He does it a couple times near the beginning and again when we're close to the camera.
I wonder if he's doing it to try to get away from the bit? Although I've always been very soft with my hands, and especially lately with him..
Could it be that he feels unbalanced and is trying to stop himself from feeling that way by doing this?
I had my friend ride him as well and he did it to her too, so I don't think it's rider error, though it could be if we are doing the same thing...
hows his saddle and pad ? it rubbing , almost like he is trying to stretch out his back.
His saddle seems to fit fine. The pad is a new one... it's possible that it could be bothering him. I'll see if I can find another one to borrow and maybe that will help.
It is hard to tell from a short clip, but to me, he doesn't look lame; he looks annoyed about something. I would rethink anything new in your program such as saddle, pad, bit, etc.
Leg....more leg. Push him into the contact and hold him there.
Could he be evading the bit, or having an issue in his mouth? When was the last time you had his teeth checked out?

He looks like he wants to stretch his neck and back but is not comfortable doing so, like something is stopping him.
