Previcox vs. Adequan
Hey guys, I'm looking for a new arthritis supplement for my 20 year old pony. She is in very good shape and loves to jump so I want to keep her happy, but she does have a lot of stiffness in her hind end. What are your experiences with using Previcox and Adequan and which do you recommend? I still plan to do the research of course, but I am just looking for some oppinions. :-)

If you can only do one of them, I would choose the Adequan. It is very effective for helping with joint discomfort. Previcox is a pain reliever, similar to bute, and is easy on the digestive tract. It will not help any joint issues. It will only mask the pain from arthritis. www.adequan.com/what-does-Adequan-im-do.aspx

More and more vets are no longer suggesting previcoxx. They're prescribing equioxx. The reason for this is because they legally can not scribe out previcox for horses as it is not a medication FOR horses. They can scribe it out for your dog and if you just so happen to use it on your horse, then they can't control that. But the industry standard is becoming Equioxx.

Adequan isn't available right now. Something to do with the manufacturing. It is supposed to be back on the market MAYBE late July.
As far as Previcox, there are lots of drugs including people drugs that can be used just fine for horses/dogs etc.... and Previcox is one of them. There is no law saying it can't be prescribed for horses. The clinic I work at uses Previcox very regular. As long as a vet prescribes it, it's not a problem at all.

Second the info on Previcox being for dogs. What I thought was strange (as we used it recently on a mare with a bowed tendon), was that dogs could have a whole dose, but our mare could only have 1/4. Weird stuff.
Go with Adequan if you're looking for lasting arthritis relief, not just pain relief.

Our vets always give a full pill. We have never given a partial.
Unfortunately Adaquan isn't available right now unless a vet just has any leftover around so the OP won't be able to get any until it does become available.

Look into Pentosan. very similar to Adequan, half the price and it has antiimflammatories in it. Really was a lifesaver for my mare.
I heard Adequan could be off the market for a year or more. No sense in starting a product you can't even get.

I heard something about that. Our BO stocked up on Adequan when her filly had to have stifle surgery, so we have a whole truckload of it.
Why is it off the market?

Something to do with the equipment manufacturing it somehow. Not a recall or anything. I forget exactly what the reason is, one of our vets at work was talking about it Friday.
