Barrel Racing Trouble

I have recently been working with my horse on barrels for about a month now. We trotted the pattern for weeks and just started cantering. She will canter the 2nd and third barrel, but not the first. she will start trotting even if I push her. She has no health issues. My saddle fits. I make sure I bend her and get her stretched and warm her up both ways. Any tips?

Is she approaching it on the correct lead?
Lots of horses will slow to a trot when they're turning on the wrong lead to keep their balance.

Check your pockets coming into the barrel make sure she has enough room to move around it, also make sure she is on the correct lead and when you come into the barrel that you are pulling on your rein upwards instead of over top of the barrel. This should help ya fix that problem I had it with my first barrel mare and it was because I threw her off balance coming into it by pulling my rein over the barrel instead of picking her shoulder up n moving her out n around it. Good luck

Before anything like some previous posters have said, really make sure she is on a correct lead when approaching anything at the lope. If you are able to rule out any issue with teeth, chiro or tack fitting then there are some things you could try.

If she is just being a pill and won't lope into her first, start at the end of the arena before making your approach to the first barrel and lope some good size circles, making sure to circle the SAME way you are are going to turn your first barrel. Lope a few to make sure her body is collected and she is listening to your cues, then come right out of the circle and start into your first barrel that way to get the lope. Make sure your approach/pocket is giving her enough space to make a good turn.
