Is That Fair?
I went to an intro to hunters show today and competed in flat classes. Everything seemed, except for two people who were in my division. During classes, I noticed an older rider riding next to a younger. At first, I thought she was just passing, but she stayed there for a majority of the classes, and I noticed whenever I got close enough, I could hear the older rider coaching the younger rider. Both riders placed in the classes. This is my first hunter show, and my first show in years, and I'm not exactly sure if that's something you can do.
I would say no, especially if that same rider was 'coaching' through the rest of the show, in warmups, etc. there are division classes and open classes for a reason, to keep instructors out of the rings their students will be riding in. Even if the older rider wasn't an official coach, it would still irritate me.
If I were you I would ask the show grounds' how much 'ringside coaching' they allow.
I think for me a lot would depend on the level of the show. A class A show, Regional champs, National or World Champs? NO and I'd see about finding a ring steward.
A one day, pretty much schooling show? Sure, not a problem. Open class, not a problem, green horse class, not a problem (again only at a low level show), but if one's a pro riding ammy or fiddling the system in some way, then I'd have a problem with it.
