Skin problem - HELP NEEDED
Hey, I havn't been online in AGES but one of my shetland ponies has some sores and I have no idea how he got them. Most of them are situated around his tail and rump but there seems to be some hairless spots on his ear and belly too. For that reason I'm thinking it might be a fungus - especially because daily detol treatements isn't making it dissapear or stop scabbing. I bought him about a year ago and noticed that he had odd scars on his rump and the top of his tail seemed to be deformed but the hair grew back quickly so I forgot about it. Maybe something is triggering what ever it is up again? Or maybe it's more simple??

Can anybody help me???

PS: I can get photo's up if anybody is interested or has questions, etc.

Has he been wormed recently?
sounds almost like he is scratching his bottom on something.

Sounds like rain rot to me too, try a medicated shampoo and see if that helps

1. Make sure parasites aren't a problem--flies, midges, lice and anything else you might have.

2. Try cleaning the areas daily with betadine solution which is both antibacterial and antifungal.

If you don't see improvement in a few days time then have your vet out to examine the spots.

hey thank you guys. he is up to date with worming and i just discovered today that my other miniature has it too but on his mane. I also started usuing betadine today incase it's a fungus but i dont think it's rain rot for some reason. ironically, it has been raining for the last 2 days so i havnt been able to take photos but it seems that whatever this is, it makes sections on the baseline of the mane/tail swell up like balloons and make the horses itch them untill the skin is raw.

I'll see how it goes until tomorrow and then I'll put some photos up. If it doesn't get better I'll definitely try some medicated shampoo or call the vet out.

I bought a wide range of antibacterial and antifungul washes and creams today after visiting the vet and my local horse shop. The rasges just got worse since yesterday so I hope my new stuff works. Heres some pictures anyway incase anyone has seen it before:

It looks like a fungus to me (rain rot) hopefully it will clear up with all the treatment you got.
