Has this ever happened to anyone? When I worked at Dixie we had a horrible accident while they were training. A guy was roman riding a stubborn team to try to get them over the hoop. I guess they were setting up to jump and King shied to the left while Elvis jumped the hoop. When he did the rider tried to pull back to stop him and I guess Elvis bit down, snapped the bit and almost cut his tongue completely off. He had to have it stitched back together. =/ It was just a big mess. Has anyone ever heard of this? If I remember correctly, they used an eggbutt snaffle bit on all the horses.
Wow, I never thought of a bit breaking. I think I would want to sue someone:shock:
I've had the bridle break and the bit fall out. I've also had reins break or come loose while riding. It makes your heart skip a beat but it never injured the horse.
oh wow, never in my entire life have i had a bit break on me! i have seen the bits start to wear in the joint and get a little thin though. I wonder if that's what was happening and it just snapped under the strain?
I saw the bit after they took the bridle off but I honestly cant remember where it snapped. It was easy to see how it could have sliced his tongue to pieces though, it was extremely sharp. It might have snapped between the joints. Dixie was fairly cheep and I've never heard about them replacing any bits in the years that it was open. Many were starting to rust. =/
The bridles were also swapped a lot (if the riders couldnt find their own, they would take someone elses) so its hard to tell who had used it before.
