I am wondering what Rodeo event is best for me and the horse?

I have been riding Western Pleasure for 5+ years and I am interested to maybe get into a rodeo event. (Not cow roping or anything with cows, bulls, bucking broncos, etc...) I would like your opinion.

The only thing left is barrel racing. Lol.

SorrelHorse 06-24-2013 11:58 AM

Lol yeah you don't have a lot of options there, with no cows, no roping, and no roughstock...

Maybe rather than "rodeo" events, watching a gymkhana day might give you some ideas!

I am sorry I leave no real options but one question, How does pole bending work? And i say no cows, bulls, Bucking horses because i feel bad for those animals

QHriderKE 06-24-2013 10:38 PM

*deep breath* *ignores "feel bad for those animals"*
If you want to "rodeo" most rodeos only have barrel racing if you dont want to rope. Your best bet then would be to do gymkhana instead.

Oh dear.

Okay, here's some literature then...

PRCA Rodeo Events

Rodeo Events Explained

Pole Bending is not a main event for rodeo. You can do it in such like high school rodeo, but not PRCA. It is the same as barrel racing but a different pattern. Fastest time wins.

No rodeo event is cruel to animals, but that is an argument long worn out and exhausting to me...You could search the forum here to see it again.

Yes....

Just remember too that NONE of these events can be taught without help, NONE of these can be just picked up and done on a whim. It's a dedication and a LOT of work to get there, and if you don't already have a speed event horse it could takes years to get a horse to that point.

Ok thanks for the tips.... But do you guys think if you were a baby cow, would you like to be chased by a scary guy and horse with a rope, only to be nearly stangled to death then flipped on your back and carried away, wondering where your mom is and what you did to deserve this? I don't think so....

U could do the flags at the beginning......
Or barrels, or poles, or flags (the run not the ceremony) or dash for cash, there's options at local open shows. Big rodeos, maybe not, but our local rodeo has most contesting/ speed classes one night and stock shows the next.
If that's an option for you.
