Just a casual thread for talking because summer vacation just started and I am already bored.
so what are your opinions on bareback pads? I personally have never used one but I just bought one on ebay and considering buying one for my sisters pony too. I just feel so bad tacking up my poor big guy in this heat, I would hate to be wearing a navajo, then a wooly gel pad, and then a HEAVY western saddle all held on with a tight band around my middle. I think he might appreciate the saddle blankets in the winter but like I am scared he is just going to pass out on me in the summer. I am currently riding bareback now just because I feel bad, so I was thinking a nice 8lb breathable suede pad with stirrups could be very useful.
Here is the one I bought, SP204A Hilason Natural Horsemanship Leather Bareback English Treeless Saddle PAD | eBay
personally, i HATE stirrups on a bareback pad. i have one thats basically just a fluffy fleece pad with a girth attachment. i LOVE it. we go swimming in it, trail rides, it helps keep my tb built paints whither from hurting me, saves me the bareback butt look.
Yep - just like Jaydee said plus I think use of the stirrups may cause slippage of the pad if the horse turns suddenly and unexpectedly (without stirrups you might make an involuntary dismount but with stirrups you risk getting hung up).
I just got this bareback pad a few months ago: Western Bareback Pad It weighs almost nothing (8 lbs sounds really heavy for a bareback pad!) and is super comfy. Almost a little too comfy, actually
I have used a bareback pad on occasion but have never used a breastplate with it. I'm not thinking of anything negative in using it - one would think it might help keep it from slipping but I should like to hear others' opinions on this.
If I want to stay clean while riding bareback I just use a saddle pad and one of those elastic surcingles to keep it in place. Works just as well and the surcingle was cheaper than buying a bareback pad.
I'm receiving this one in mail tomorrow and hoping it is as good as the reviews say - English Bareback Pad . I wouldn't ride a bareback pad with stirrups, though, that's very bad for the horses' back. And, if I had more money, I would have ordered the Libra bareback pad, they are said to be of a supreme quality.
