First time drawing with charcoals
So, I just got one of those more professional drawing pencil sets and charcoal pencil sets. This was my first shot at drawing with charcoals, so critique please! :)
I love charcoal .. it's one of my favorite mediums..
there's a lot to like about this drawing. I like your use of some very darks, here and there, and the composition is very good, very strong with the diagonal line being a clear focal point.
the placement of the eyes is anatomically accurate, something a lot of folks screw up. Yours are in perfect alignment with each other, same as the nostril, and these two pairs parallel each other, as they do in real life.
You have the multiple curves of the ears well done , particularly the left, which has a delicate shape (I adore horses' ears!).
However, the porportions are not as accurate as the details. The ears are kind of short, and the distance from the eyes to the very front of the nose a tiny bit long. if you were to enlarge the ears alone, this would help balance the overall horse.
Lastly, if you had a move obvious lightsource, this would help "round" the horse out. even the halter , as it goes over the nose, can be shaded to show roundness, but you have to determine from which direction the light is coming.
The clarity of the tack is lovely, but is so much crisper than the horse that it almost become more interesting to look at than him. However, with such lovely eyes, I will always find myself looking there.
Yeah, I did make the ears too small. I ran out of paper and I had already drawn the whole outline and I didn't want to re-do it so I just tried to make it work!
I tried to make the light source come from the right, but it didn't exactly work out as planned.
Here's a drawing I did this afternoon, brings that eye you like a little closer haha.
Having longer ears would defiantly help make the horse beautiful.
If you hold your hand over the ears and imagine what type/size (of ear)the horse would look good with, then pull your hand away and you can tell it's too small. Am I explaining that okay?
As in I put my hand over the ears and imagined long delicate ears that are slightly forward (because the horse is looking at something with interest, so the ears would be also pricked forward....see the horse in my avatar)but then I pulled my hand away and could see how much shorter they were then what I "saw"....
Also the mane could have a little more "top" to it I think.
Otherwise the drawing is totally awesome!
Thanks, and yeah I see what you mean with the ears, wish I had more room on the paper to re-do them :/ but I'm going to work on the mane a little more.
I'm going to start another tomorrow and try to get he ears a little bigger and better shading with a more obvious light source. Hopefully the next one won't take me as long either. This one took me like 3 days haha.
I'm happy with it, though it does need some improvement and I need improvement, but for me since I only started drawing a little more than a month, I can't complain.
By the way, my drawing is supposed to be a Thoroughbred.
Great artwork, love it, but in the first pictures the ears seem small to me. xD
