Saddle Hunt AGAIN! For An English Saddle!
Okay, my boss and I are looking for a brown english close contact saddle with a wide tree. There is no real price limit on it, we just want one that will fit me, my boss and the horses (mainly me and the horses) and we would like it to be between 16 and 18".
I have been looking on ebay for new and used english saddles. This is one that I found...
Close Contact 16 5" Complete English Saddle Package | eBay
I am looking for used ones too, or new, it doesn't matter. So what do you all think of this one? Any other suggestions on sights to look at, or links to some good saddles.
Remember, I am looking for an all purpose, close contact english saddle, with a wide tree and the seat between 16 and 18 inches. Would prefer a brown or tan, but black is good too.
I already have my western saddle, so let the search begin with the english!
Please do NOT put that thing on your horse... Those 'packages' are terrible quality and will cause your horse a lot of pain. Look for a quality brand

Agreed... avoid all of those packages. Look in Stubben, Bates, Wintec, Crosby, Pessoa, Marcel Toulouse, Collegiate, and if you really want to make us drool, Antares, Tad Coffin, or PJ. Just to get you started! I love my Stubben Roxanne All Purpose- unless you are doing lots of jumping go with the VSS (AP) not the S (jump with very forward flap). Wintec are made by Bates, they are the same but synthetic basically. They are slightly more adjustable saddles with interchangeable gullets, and you can even use this riser system to help them fit, but the same saddle will not fit all horses even with the gullet/riser system.
So besides the normal don't buy that crap, I thought you had mentioned before that you needed a 16in western seat? English saddles are measured differently than western so you need to take your western seat size and add 2 inches. That is the rough estimate since obviously every saddle will fit a little differently. Also keep in mind most sellers measure them wrong. Make sure you get pictures of them measuring the seat from the nail head to center of back.
Thanks! I am new to English, and if we don't find one, we will fix up the old one. We would like a used one, but we are open to anything.
Also, the one I am riding in right now, is a 16 or 17 in and fits me good, and I am riding in a 16 in western one right now.
We are not in a hurry to find one, and if we don't, thats okay, there is already 3 others we can use (2 dressage, 1 all purpose, close contact)
I doubt you're riding in a 16 Western and a 16 English. I ride a 14-1/2 Western, and a 16-1/2-17 English. I have a 16 Stubben dressage saddle for my pony mare, but its not very comfortable for me. For reference, I'm 5'2", 130 lbs. I really doubt anyone heavier or much taller would fit a 16 English saddle. It's a kids size. If you are comfortable in a 16 Western, you probably need a 17-1/2 to 18-1/2 English saddle. Also, English saddles are much harder to fit to the horse. They come in too many shapes and sizes (tree-wise), so you'd do well to take your horse to a tack store and try them out. Otherwise, I suggest you use an online retailer that allows a trial.
