AQHA hunter under saddle
I have a Quarter horse gelding that I would love to have be successful at AQHA shows in hunter under saddle. Hes bred more for western pleasure (out of Protect Your Assets and Zipped In Leather) but shows more potential for hunt seat. He was started in WP as a 3 year old, then two years ago, right before I bought him, he had about a year and a half of experience in hunter under saddle and jumping. Since Ive had him I have unfortunately not been able to take lessons on him for AQHA but I will be starting with a trainer soon. I know he will be able to help me, but before that I just wanted some of your guys opinions. I do not have a recent video of him riding, but I will hopefully have one soon to post. Hes 9, 15.3 hands, has had local showing experience (but not AQHA), and has had some good training put on him, but hes never performed for me like he did his past owner. I feel like a piece to the puzzle is still missing; ever since Ive had him Ive been trying to figure him out and how he was trained. Weve improved so much, but were still not there yet. I know part of it is him developing the right muscle to use his back and lower his head, but he has had the training so I know some knowledge is there. But is it possible to get going in AQHA with him, even if he is 9 and needs more training and finishing touches? How do you know if you have a horse that can be successful?

He's built a bit downhill, and I wish his croup wasn't so steep, but overall I think he's pretty nice. He's gained some muscle since this picture too.

I have a trainer now, but still want some opinions.

Do you have a video of him moving out? I like critiquing those better, I'm not the most fantastic at judging just based on the pictures. Others will have to help you there. I do love breed showing though. He's got a cute face, too!

Have you watched some AQHA HUS classes? I am sure there are some on YouTube. That will give you an idea of how you need to form your guy to show successfully. I say that, but then I think if you like to show, and can afford the entry fees, then go do it, and learn that way.

Good Luck!

I like him. I think he has potential. He should do fine in the youth classes.

Thanks. I'll be in youth this year but not next, but I'll be in novice.
