So I Have the Memory of an 80 Year Old ...

Hello HorseForum!!

So, I've found that I am terrible at learning courses...
I can learn them easily if I can look at a paper and the arena. I use descriptions of the jump - wagon wheel, to brush box, rollback to the Liverpool, etc. I could tell you the jump course forwards and backwards if I'm standing on the ground watching. The problem comes when I get one the horse. About half-way through the course, I completely forget where I'm going. Especially if the jumps don't have any fillers, and look exactly the same. I was wondering if anybody had some exercises or interesting ways that you remember courses??

Wow that's an interesting dilemma. I've never heard of knowing the course before hand, but then forgetting it. Do you get jumper's blackout or is it just the course you forget half way through? I will be of no help since I do it the same way, red gate, to green roll top thing, to white rail thing etc. Also in eventing the fences are numbered so that helps a lot.

I used to be HORRIBLE at remembering courses. Horrible, horrible horrible. Throw down a bunch of ground poles at home, make up a course and ride the ground poles! Also, remembering dressage tests may help.a bit.

@MyBoyPuck - Could you define what jumper's blackout is? I think I'm just forgetting the course, but I don't know what the blackout entitles, so I'm not sure. As for the Eventing aspect, I do wish they would put that into place with the regular jumpers, it sure would help! :p

@SlideStop - That sounds like an awesome idea! Thank you so much for that, I'll draw some stuff out :)

Boy, if my trainer had a dollar for every time she was like "no!" "wrong!" "not that one!" "wrong way!".... Lol

Jumper's blackout is when you can't remember how you jumped a fence, where your hands were, what your striding was, if you were jumping ahead or left behind, etc. I got it the first 2 years I was showing. I could not for the life of me tell you how I jumped any of the fences. Somehow I could still navigate the course. Not sure how that works. It has since stopped and I can remember every detail.

SlideStop:: LOL!!! That sounds just like my trainer! "Where are you going? What's happening?" Lol!

MyBoyPuck:: Oh, I see! No, I've never really had a problem with that. I'm thinking I forget because I actually over think *everything* when I ride. I do my best when I focus on one little piece of my riding (put your hands forward, for example, instead of hands forward, heels down, straight back, eyes up, etc. all at once.) so .... Maybe make the course the one thing I focus on? Lol

On more then one occasion I have forgotten a course that I was required to come up with myself at a show. I could have just jumped anything, as long as it was in the right direction of the jump (ie, couldnt jump a roll top the wrong way) I've withdrawn from so many classes. Its mere luck if I remember a course. I know how you feel.

wetrain:: I feel you! Doing Gambler's Choices at shows is always interesting for me ... Forget the course in the middle? Do whatever works until time runs out! Lol as long as you remember which one the Joker is!

MyBoyPuck, how did you get away from jumper's blackout?? I do the same thing, I just never knew it was a real problem with a real name ;)
