Do You Think It's Too Much?
So I have a 5 year old retrained OTTB. He was retrained for jumping, and now im riding in a Western saddle. All seems well, he's taking it very well. Now down to my question. Do you think it would be too much if I started training him for something else, say driving? I don't compete, and the driving wouldn't be competitive either, just something that he would be able to do, and could do once every while. I don't wanna overload him. He's a very calm horse and puts up with me riding with tarps tied to the saddle, walking over tarps, etc. I just wanted to see if you guys thought it would overload him at all. Thanks in advance!:D
I don't see why not. If you can train him in it well and hes doing very well then go for it. If your not sure how to train for driving, I would just have a trainer help you or do it for you. Driving is fun, I was in the process of training my 12 y/o TWH to do it before I sold him.
I do know how to train driving, but I don't have access to a cart. Do you think staying in the ground driving stage would be fine till I could get my hands on one?
Nope, our goal with training horses is that they learn each time they go out.
My goal for my TB is to be a jumper, but he took a bad bite to the back, he learned to drive on long leads in no time, as I could not ride.
I think ill start tomorrow then :) Its a bit too hot to ride, so I"ll just do some ground work and get him used to long reining :)
Get up early. (Gentle kick up the rear end).
lol I shall.
