pony's teeth filed?
We brought home a pony mare yesterday. She had been rescued from a bad situation four weeks ago and is slowly putting on some much needed weight. She came in with her two year old filly. The filly was decent weight, but the mare has a BCS of about 2. They think she is about 12 years old.

Her mouth is... odd. I took some photos. I've never seen anything like this. Her top teeth are really small as if they have been filed down.

Now before you jump to "cribber", I have a cribber. I know a lot about cribbing. This mare has not cribbed at all.

Is it possible someone tried to correct a parrot mouth or some other defect?

Im thinking more like 20s.

Poor little girl. I don't think she is 12, but it is possible she had a severe underbite or some dental bite imperfection that was adjusted for...but that would have been some drastic adjusting!! I wouldn't even venture a guess.

WOW.. someone really tried to hide her age. thats just cruel.
I agree that she would be in her 20's by the slope of the gums and bottom teeth

Looks like she's in her 20s from those bottom teeth. Those are not 12 year old teeth..... can't believe some filed her teeth down...

I have a 12 year old his teeth aren't that long on the bottom.

I don't think her teeth were filed down. I think the lower teeth have gotten so long that they are preventing the uppers from growing properly. Also because of the amount of wave or dip in her teeth most likely her back teeth do not touch the uppers to the lowers when she chews, which is contributing to her body score.
Get her teeth floated by a DVM that specializes in dentistry and she will be on her way to a being healthy girl.

I don't think she is in her 20's, you can still see the groove that goes away when they are 20.

I dont know if someone tried to hide her age-- i do think shes a cribber or was for a long time-- the teeth are in a V shape like that (im guessing) because shes latched on to something with the sides of her mouth not straight- through a muzzel or some kind of 'no crib' thing?

?Just a guess?

I dont think its from chewing food- maybe wood?

The groove doesn't start to receed till after 20 by 25 its gone .
. So its possible shes 20 those teeth aren't that of a 12 year mares groove disapeared at 25 not 20

I knew she wasn't 12 when I got her home. No big deal. She is sweet and gentle with my kids.

She's going to the vet this week. I'd like to see what he thinks.

UPDATE: The vet thinks she is in her mid 20s, but other than being a little thin, she is in good health. We decided to be nice and say she is 23.

And oddly enough, her mouth is balanced. Nevertheless, I'll have her looked at by an equine dentist.

She is already looking less ribby and continues to be a sweetheart.
