Crazy Start to a Trail Ride!
Hi all, just wanted to share my experience as im new to riding and was wondering if this is one of those things that happens to everyone at some point....
So my friend and I were taking her horse and another from the barn on a trail ride in Allaire SP in NJ yesterday. Her horse, Aurora, a 6 y/o mare is very sweet but a skittish horse. Things like fallen trees and tiny birds scare her :lol:I was riding Ziggy, a ~12 y/o gelding who has a mind of his own (dont they all) and likes doing things his way. He is always a pain to get off the trailer. So we unload Aurora first and tie her to the side of the trailer while we get the big boy off next. He doesnt like to back off and today was no different. He is spoiled by his barn owner who lets him turn around in their massive trailer, my friend's trailer is a small two-horse trailer and he cant turn around..... or so we thought!
Somehow he managed to spin around, since we had the center divider swinging free, and got off in very hectic manner. This of course caused the trailer to bang around scared Aurora so much that she jumped back and broke free of her harness (its a break away).
She took off down the trail with myself in chase. My friend followed with Ziggy on a lead and we all followed Aurora down the trail. She was completely "naked" with nothing on. As to not lose sight of her I ran full speed while my friend lagged behind with the other horse (we couldnt leave him unattended and had no time to waste). Finally Aurora slows up but trots again when I get close. She then quickly either got tired or realized it was only me behind her and stopped trotting away. I gave her a good talking to before I spun her around and started to walk her back, which would be easier with a rope or something! Thats when my friend came riding up bare-back using the lead rope and harness like bridle. I took the lead for a make shift leash and we walked back, well over a 1/4 mile I must add, to the trailer to saddle up for the ride.... Exciting start!
So my question, is chasing a loose horse something every one will eventually experience when riding?
When riding, handling or really just being near horses in general odds are at some point someone will make a run for it ;)
I'm glad the horse was caught quickly and not hurt!

Skittish horses will buck/bolt/rear or all 3. Such a horse can run you under a tree limb and even break your neck. When I work around my fruit trees with my gardening hat I am often reminded of this when I bang my head on a limb, and this is just ME being sloppy. I've gotten knots for this.
Bad Trailer manners can lead to YOUR broken limbs, or a good sized Vet bill. I would NOT put my good trailer horse in danger from a bad trailer horse misbehaving.
Third, yes I have chased a horse down the trail. "Corporal" (1982-2009, RIP) didn't stay put one time when I checked my daughter's saddle on a trail ride. He just started walking down the trail. My DH always said he liked to embarrass me.
The riding stable that I learned to ride by first renting horses and then taking Hunter/Jumping lessons lost several rental horses bc someone would get off or fall off, the horse would trot back to the stable and not look crossing the very busy suburban road. They were struck and killed by cars, if you didn't understand, or maimed and had to be put down.
Trail Riding is not a casual activity. ONLY well trained and obedient horses are safe to trail ride. I would suggest you get some training in both of these horses before you attempt this again.
