I'm applying to a tack shop... what should I put in my resume?
I desperately need a summer job and really want to apply to Greenhawk, its a Canada-wide tack store that opened in my city last summer. I'm putting together my resume and was just wondering what kind of things they'll be looking for that will qualify me for the job. So far I have worked in two restaurants and a coffee shop and have a ton of volunteer experience. I made a list of qualifications for this specific job:
- I have been involved with horses for 6 years through riding lessons, volunteer work and personal horse ownership
- I am friendly, out-going and love people
- I am organized, responsible and work well in a team environment
- I enjoy educating others about horsemanship/horse care and am eager to further my knowledge
Grrr... I hate resumes.... it makes me look so snotty. Any suggestions? There is obviously a lot more to my resume... but do I need a cover letter? Anyone ever applied to a tack store before? Please help!! Thanks!!
*the website is: www.greenhawk.ca
Dont look at it as being snotty hun. Look at is like you're trying to 'sell' yourself to these people. Dont lie, or fabricate anything, be truthful and honest.
Personally, if I were in the hiring position, I would be looking for someone with horse knowledge vs. someone who has non what so ever.
What types of things have you done to further your knowledge of horses/tack?
Would you be handling money?
Working a cash register?
Let me have a look at my resume and see if there is anything I can relate back to you.
So, do you work well by yourself, in a team, or both? That is something you can add.
Do you know how to manage time well? If so, that is another thing you can add.
Would you consider yourself to be leadership material? Are you able to make decisions by yourself?
Those arent really tack related, but are all things that are good to have when working in a customer service job.
Ok, thanks again Moxie! :-)
Anyone else have any ideas? It would be much appreciated.
my friend is a manager of tack shop and she said she always looks for people with computer experience so I'd add that in there if you have any. (doesn't have to be anything fancy, you could just put that you're proficient in Word or Excel or something. that is, if you are :)) They generally look for friendly people with horse experience and basic knowledge about tack, but are willing to train the right personality. So like someone said, sell yourself but be honest.
Self starter and team player but can work independently without supervision are always good to have on a resume.
Never try to put things that are false or overly embelished. If you know your way around Word or Excel put that but don't make it sound like you know the program at an expert level and could write code for it.
Thanks shooter. I know that I'm definitely not an expert in computer skills. :-P
You've got to sell yourself.
Make sure you list computer skills, use of facsimile's, answering of telephones, any database skills... etc.
Might want to mention the type of riding that you are most knowledgeable in... do you know blanket fitting and stuff like that.
