Dressage Critique *Pictures!*
Always room for improvement right? So I just want some opinions on me and my mare on our dressage :) We got a 20.3 on this test (BN B) but I can't really read the judges comments! I know the pictures aren't the greatest, but they are the most recent :-)
That horse is ADORABLE!!!
Longer reins, and bend your elbows. It looks like you're pulling back on him instead of pushing him into your hands.
With that, you'll be able to pull your shoulders back and down.
A nice pair though :)
A 20.3? That's fantastic. Like Sky pointed out, your upper body is behind the vertical giving the look that you're pulling on him instead of pushing him forward. You could probably get better collective marks if you fix that.
Hands are a bit low and arms too straight. Maybe lengthen your reins a hair, bring your hands up, bend your elbows and get your horse to stretch more into the contact.
In the eventing side of dressage the scores are backwards. If that had been a standard dressage test score and not eventing related you would be looking at a 79.7 which is absolutely fantastic.
I agree with greentree...your horse is very cute.
I agree with the other comments about your reins and elbows. Your stirrups look too short for dressage. I would drop them a few holes, as they are giving you a chair seat too. With your stirrips longer, your leg will be under you more and it will not look like your body is pushing forward so much at the posting trot. The horse's throat latch also looks too tight for my liking.
it's hard to be judged on a dressage seat when you are in a jump saddle. no way can you ever have the same position. But , you do have a bit of a "waterskier" look. But, I bet you guys are dandy over a course!
Thanks for the comments everyone :-) They're very helpful!
Going back to your position. yes, that saddle will tend to put you back on your bum a bit, but you are allowing this by clamping your thighs. You need to open your hips and allow your thighs to drape down more. That, with a longer stirrup length will help you bring your leg more under you, instead of ahead of you.
I would rather see a person leaning slightly forward than leaning back, behind the motion. Leaning a bit forward will shut your seat down too much, but it won't encourage driving with the seat which could happen by being behind the motion the way you are in the photos.
Opening your thighs and dropping your legs will help fix this. Also, sitting a little closer to your pubic bone will help get you off your bum.
One more thing....I might shift that saddle back a bit. It seems too far forward for dressage.
