Hi, can anybody advise me on the helmets that are adjustable,,, are these helmets any good?? And do the provide the same protection as a plain helmet,, please help,,thank you,, mandy
When you say adjustable do you mean the dial fit? The helmets I found with the Dial-Fit-System are ASTM/SEI approved so I imagine they protect the same as the non DFS versions. Best thing to do is go to your local tack shop that may carry a DFS style helmet and try it on. It may work for some but if the general fit isn't correct, it won't do you any good even if it is a DFS.
You mean the dial fit helmets, right? I found I don't like them as much as a more padded fitted helmet. I went from an IRH schooling helmet to a Tipperary Sportage and I LOVE it. I found that the dial fits just tighten around the front and back of your head, which gave me a headache, and still wobble side to side. But I think it depends on your head shape. Try some at a local tack store and see what you like. :)
I have a Troxel Spirit helmet. It is ASTM/SEI-certified and it has a great dial fit. I think it's really comfortable, I haven't experienced any headaches or any discomfort. I bought a large because I have a big noggin and surprisingly enough, I was also able to dial it down small enough to fit a five year old girl perfectly. I was skeptical at first, thinking it would never go that small, but it did! Maybe she just has a giant head, too!
Here is a link to it... Troxel Spirit Helmet - Statelinetack.com
It comes in lots of pretty colors and it's inexpensive compared to other helmets. I wouldn't show in it or anything, but it's perfect for trails or schooling.
I feel the same as traildust. I didnt like the dial fit, had two of them break on me. Plus seems liek they stick up higher. I like the IRH , and the tippery sportage.
As long as the helmet is ATSM/SEI certified for riding, you're fine. After that, it's going to really depend on your personal preference. I don't much care for the dial system. I really like my Troxel Sport over my other Troxel (the Spirit I think?) that has the dial system.
