Halter breaking ?
I was just given a 6 month old thoroughbred/quarter horse. She has never seen a halter or had any human contact. The guy I got her from really needs to get her out of there because he dont have time or room to keep her. She was given to him because her owners could not afford her anymore. So my question is how do i haul a horse that isnt halter broke and scared of people. I dont want to force it on her because that would be to traumatic but i dont have the time to spend with her to get her more comfortable around people.
Do you have a stock trailer rather than a two horse? You could put some feed into the front, corral her with some pannels and give her time. There is no other way without a seddative unless you have time to work with her.
If you do have time to work with her you could back the trailer up to the pen and work her. Just make sure you use the trailer as a safety and resting zone. Eventually she will realize the trailer is a good thing and you wont even have to touch her. Just close the middle gate after she has loaded a few times and feels comfortable and calm in the trailer. I would NOT use a two horse trailer on her first trip. I have actually had one jump half its body into the front of one while I was hauling it down the road before!!!
If time is not an option I would suggest you make a chute and drive her onto the trailer. Once you get her home you can take your time.
The chute doesn't have to be fancy but you'll need a couple of people.
If your hauling in a two horse angle make sure the dividers are secured to the wall and that all the windows are closed.
Sometimes training first isn't an option. I've also seen a mild sedative used. Not anything to knock them out but something to just take the edge off so the horse is less likely to hurt itself on the trip.
Do you have someone that can help you? Does your horse have a buddy that can ride with? The chutes are the route I've always seen used for a horse that had to be moved but didn't know how to load.
Once home proper training can be done.
Welcome to the Forum and Good Luck, this is never easy.
Ok i just got this forum today because I need help and I don't know how to post my own question yet I literally go this username 5 minutes ago... so please if anyone reads this help... but only if you know how! I have this Arabian Gelding and he is 6 years old and he is kinda showy like he's not too spirited but he looks flashier than the arabs posted on this he's more of a... bask or khemosabi or masterpiece pa National Sport horse winner.. well he does now sport horse halter sorta I do need help with his trot but what i was really wondering is if it is too late to train him halter... halter not sport horse halter just halter I don't know if he's too old and it's too late or if I still have a chance???? I don't know how to even start either so PLEASE HELP!
When I'm clueless, I go to someone that already is showing in the class that I'm interested in locally. They'll be able to give you the run down on the "what to do's" a lot better than over the net people can. I would also maybe contact a trainer in your area to help with what you're looking into. Asking a lot of questions is the best way to get answers :D Remember that there are no dumb questions. Best of luck to you and welcome to the forum. I hope you stick around as there are many knowledgeable folks here that can offer good advice. :D
(PS, if you want to start your own thread to discuss this further, you only need to click the new thread button in this section's front page and write away...then you just submit new thread.) Please feel free to PM me or any mod for further assistance!!!
Just wanted to thank everyone for their help and advise. We were able to haul her no problem. They just gave her a little push and she walked right in and another little push and she walked out no problem at all. They also put a halter on her in the trailer without much of a fight.
JMJ ~ I'm so happy that everything went smoothly!!!! Hooray!!!
