Please Help - Circular Wound on horse (video included)

Ok, first of all, this horse is *not* mine.
Long story short, a friend took some horses from an ex because they were all mistreated and looked awful.
all were boney, skinny, and had a sickness going on (lots of mucusy discharge) and so much more.
i come over to help care for the horses any chance i get.
Well the horses are doing much much better, although, one horse doesnt look too well.
She still has a discharge coming from the nose. It seems to be going away though.
What does worry me, is there is this awful looking circular wound under her head/cheek.
Its very pus looking and it seems to be leaking a yellow color discharge, scabby, and just plain awful looking.
but i cant figure out what could cause such a wound,
its too big to look like a barbed wire injury.
I owned horses with my family before and know some basic common stuff, but we never had wound issues with ours, especially like this.
Her temperament is normal, eats normal, and seems all around fine except this.
i took a video today hoping to get some kind of help as to what it could be..
Please, if you have any insight or any clue as to what it may possibly be, let me know.
~~ i uploaded the video to my PhotoBucket, the password to see the vid is: horsewound aka 'horse wound' without the quote marks or spaces.

I'm not a vet and I have never seen it myself (knock on wood) but my guess is strangles. Try Googling "strangles" and see what you can find.

I think that would explain the location of the abscess and the nasal discharge and multiple sick horses. :-(

Best of luck and glad to hear they are doing better. :-)

Looks like this horse has had the strangles and is on the healing end of them. That wound looks like a strangles abscess hole. Stangles is very contageous. They may have all had it to varying degrees. What did the vet say? Im guessing they werent cultured. I hope your horses are not near these.

That was a very hard video to see what was up. It was fast and flippy lol.

Sounds like strangles to me too and you need to get a vet urgently. I hope we are all not correct, but I fear that we are.

To the original poster, strangles is potentially fatal and very infectious. All these horses need to be isolated from other horses. Anyone who is in contact with them should treat themselves as a potential carriers of the virus and must follow bio-security procedures. By which I mean put on protective overalls before coming into contact with the horses, and then take them off when leaving so that the infection cannot be carried on your clothes. Wash hands thoroughly, do not share grooming equipment and so on.

Good luck with it all, it sounds like a horrible mess that has landed on your hands.
