Circular Cuts?

Soo..I have to think this isn't just coincidence that my mare got the same exact injuries in two different areas (where she was).

The one that's shaved was taken aftet two days of healing, it initially looked like the one near her throatlatch.
Both are extremely painful (she's usually very stoic), but she pawed at me for the first time yesterday while I was looking at the newest one and she threw herself into a wall the day I shaved around the first one.

Are they both near the throat latch? They almost look like an abscess popped.

The newest is near the throatlatch and the other is where you'd give a shot.

But, I don't understand how it could be an abscess because there were no bumps, balls, or sore spots prior to this.

The first picture is about 1" in diameter, and the second (oldest) is about a half inch in diameter.

I would get the vet out to check. If it is that painful and you are now seeing another one, well, I wouldn't wait.

it could also be a insect bite, spider ? the center does look like an abcess , I would put some betadine , or vetercyn or an antibiotic ointment on them, after washing them with mild soap. Ic she stalled look for spider webs, scorpions etc. Since she has two now , you may consider the Vet. Are there any horses that have been affected ?

Iseul 07-13-2013 09:50 PM

I planned on washing with betadine last night and I haven't been able to get out because of work and such yesterday or today.

It does look like an abscess, but there was no bump, swelling, or heat before they showed up.

She was in the paddock the first night, and she was in the hay barn the second night..and I don't think we have any scorpians in western PA, lol.

No other horses have been affected (20+ others).

I'm gonna text my friend and ask for her vet's number because I will NOT use the barn vet.

Nope, would not think scorpions in Penns. Did not notice the state .. i have even found them in my house..creep me out. Are there wasp ? hornets ? The Vet would be the safest decision .) It seems odd there was no swelling or heat. Hopefully it wont be something that needs lanced and will heal soon.

We get massive scorpions where I live. Black widows, rattle snakes and the latest....huge fuzzy spiders, yikes.

I lived in PA for a while, but it has been so long that I don't remember the big bad creepy crawly things over there.

Maybe brown recluse? What about a huge horse fly bite?

demonwolfmoon 07-16-2013 04:54 AM

um where are scorpions in CA?! never saw them before buf I never saw a black widow before we looked under this new house...
