I want to start training my horse for barrel racing but i don't know where to start! if you have any advice please share. my horse is a appendix quarter horse/Arabian mix.
Getting a trainer is always a good place to start.
They can tell what you need to work on and where you need to begin, for both you and your horse.
Make sure you have a good foundation on your horse - a good trot, lope, stop, response to seat and leg, soft in the face and bendy through the body, then you need to do TONS of SLOW work. This thread has a lot of good places to start.
Thank you for the advice. i just green broke my horse and i have no idea what to do next
Get him broke broke. Stay away from barrels for a while, and get him working GOOD first
Get yourself a good trainer. It sounds like your horse is still green enough to not have a solid foundation, and you have a lot to do before you're ready to see barrels. The good thing is your horse is a clean slate! You can work specifically on the things a horse needs for barrels and not have to "unteach" a bad habit.
the only problem i am having is that she was a rescue and the people who had her did some stuff to make her scared of saddles. they like forced people on her and stuff.
Then start from square 1.
Scared of the saddle? bad fitting saddles can cause this- does your saddle fit her right?
If your horse is scared of saddles, you've got a lot of work in your hands before you can even think about barrels.
As Toto said, make sure your saddle fits her and she doesn't have chiropractic issues. If there is pain behind anything, of course she's going to refuse.
If pain is not causing it, then you can work on retraining her. If she's scared of being saddled, then you need to go back to ground work. Act as if she is unbroke and never did any of this before.
I also agree that you should be working with a trainer because it sounds like you need help with your horse.
Get your horse broke, broke, broke first. Green broke and barrel training does not go together.
