Opinions on 7 year old QH gelding?
okay so on Saturday im going to check out this 7 year old black QH gelding. 16 hh. (kinda big for what i wanted but i can get over that...) she wanted 2500 then brought down his price to 2000. so i emailed her and she said if hes out by the 1st of March she will give him to me for $1600.
he doesnt wear shoes. was once reg but papers were lost. he was vetted about 4 weeks ago by the NYC police, but then they lost there funding to buy him. he was 100% sound. his one vice would be he had a bad canter so he was drilled to pick up the correct lead and now when you ask for a trot from a walk he adds in a canter stride cause he thinks that's what you want but he goes right back down to the trot after the one canter stride (it can be fixed im sure..) not hot and good on trails. hes kind of new to ring work but an old pro out on the trails. no health issues. she said he can be lazy when hes out of work...(i dont really know what that means). hes got a pretty soft mouth and uses a snaffle bit. no bucking/rearing. trailers great. she doesnt know how he clips becauseshe got him in on a trade for her 2 morgans i think. but she said he was good for her when she clipped him using the scissors. shes offering to bring him to my barn (if i like him of course) for $100. and there a little over an hour from me near my aunts house.
so sorry that was so long...without further adue here is Remi (name will be changed if i buy him! lol :D)
another to add- hes not use to ring work since he is usually used for trails but he doesnt neck rein and is ridden both english and western. he also has more of a long englishy stride.
I like him!!
I like the name Remi too.
the only thing that really jumps out at me is his front legs. Can't pin point it, but they jump out at me.
Got a question too, in your first post you say he was 100%, do you mean is? (thats just out of curiosity)
Overall though I like him. He has they "Heey.. how's it going" (said in a really relaxed way) look to him.
If papers matter to you, you could always do the affidavit through AQHA. Just have his old owner fill it out, and then you and then it has to be notarized. (If I remember correctly, the old owner has to be the one on his papers. Not sure though)
In the 4th pic his fetlocks look swollen. He looks more suitable for english riding. I don't really like the way his neck ties.
He toes out HARD in the back end. Real bad, surprised no one mentioned that. He may toe out in the front too, hard to tell.
His neck ties in a little low, and it does not give him a very 'english' look, even for AQHA shows so you'll have trouble if you want to be really competitive. If you want to just go to a few local shows, you should be fine.
He probably doesn't clip and they're avoiding telling you that. :)
I would, 100 percent, GET A VET CHECK.
Cheap horses are usually PROBLEM horses, either now or later on because of their conformation. If the owner takes offense, then RUN AWAY!
appy- i meant is. he is 100% sound from what i hear. and he came fro ma trade from another person so i dont know who his real "original" owner is or i would deffinitly try to get the papers back on him. i dont think hes real cheap....(but im use to buying horses under 1000$ ;]
she just wants to get rid of him soon since shes got a stallion and is wanting to breed or somethng. i dont really know. haha.
He looks like a pretty nice horse to me. Yeah, he is toed out in the back and maybe a little in the front but that is not really uncommon for QH these days. He looks like he is really standing under himself on the front and that could indicate pain. I would definitely get a vet check prior to purchase. As for the price, in my area, that would actually be considered pretty high. He doesn't neck rein, has no papers (none that you can probably get anyway) and has no show experience. Down here, that equals a very low price tag even if he is BROKE. All in all, I like him and he just has a really sweet laid back look. Let us know how he does and what you decide.
do you know how long he's been with his current owner?
From what you've written, it sounds like its kind of recent.
I agree that he probably doesn't clip. and she just doesn't want to tell you.
I agree with getting a vet check.
Even though the owner said he was vet checked recently, I would highly recommend getting another one... you don't know for sure that it was funding that was cut that was the deciding factor... just thought I'd point that out.
He's cute, worth a look if you're willing to drive out there!!
