My Parelli Journey (Journals)
Hello Everyone, well as some of you may know I have recently decided to take the Parelli route. I feel as though me and my horse have really drifted and are not having a good relationship with one another. SO, in an attempt to bring me and my horse Nana back together, I have chosen to test drive the "7 games" that Parelli offers.
I will post Journals on each days work, and through those journals I will ask questions and I hope maybe you guys can help me on my way.
so lets begin!
Day 1 (February 24, 2009)
- Today was an AMAZING DAY!!! I did Friendly, Porcupine, and driving game and nana was attentive, having fun, and gain some respect for me. I was not perfect on doing the methods but I think she really got what I was trying to show her. At the end of the session, she even followed me around (without a halter), lol but only for alittle while.. then she kind went on her way.
Day 2 (February 27, 2009)
- Today was not as much progress as I would have liked, but we did make some leaps. I am continued to work on the first 3 of the games and I think she is now really starting to catch on. However, she seemed bored and distracted easily. One big leap that i think I am having with her is that, i think she is becoming less and less buddy sour... which is definitely a good thing!
I tried to switch up the games today, and I even introduced her to the Circling game.. but she just seemed bored... should i be worried or should i just keep tryin to mix it up a bit?
If she is a left brained horse she probably is going to be bored if you keep focusing on the same games each session. But don't worry! :) That's the nature of the left brained horse. You have to PROGRESS. Once you see that she understands the basic idea of the game MOVE ON. And once she knows the basics of all the games start to mix them up. And if you are still wanting to do Parelli after you get the 7 Games under your belt move on to Level 2 ground work. That's where the real fun starts! The biggest piece of advice I could give you is to NOT DWELL IN LEVEL 1. If you do the 7 Games will become the 7 Tortures, especially for the left brained horse.
Brandon, I don't know much about Parelli, but something that I do with my horses to keep thing interesting is to add new thing for them to practice old skills on.
Like instead of just proper leading, lets lead through an obstacle course of lawn chairs and wheel barrows and kid's bikes, Now lets walk into the dog pen and back out (we have a huge dog pen that the dog refuses to use) ok, good horsie, lets see if we can weave in and out of the cars today (parked in the driveway of course  Please don't play IN the highway!!!
Add extra challenges
You can make the seven games more interesting for your horse by adding extra challenges. Here is what I did with one of my high energy horses. Instead of just doing circle game, I layed a barrel down next to a fence. Then I had him circle so he had to go by the fence and jump the barrel.
Another idea is to do squeeze game of sorts with circle game. Have two barrels standing, or one barrel with a space between it and a fence. Then circle your horse so he has to pass through the closed space.
Those a great suggestions, another thing to keep in mind is that horses DO have off days. So if she seems bored or inattentive on occasion, she could just be having an off day, and then I would suggest exactly what you did...switch it up a bit...
Natural Horsemanship Parelli
I am new to the horse forum but I found it interesting that Brandon is going to try the Parelli games. I don't know exactly what problems you're having or if you just want to try something new. He is one of the top trainers of our time. The program has improved with more input from Linda. I can see the changes the more she comes into her own. He is a tough act to follow. I am wondering how many of you board your horses and how many of you have them at "home"? I board my horse and Parelli games wouldn't work because there isn't always enough space. I would like to know how things go. signed esresnick
I had an amazing ride today! I rode about 10 miles on the side of the rode, and I am pretty tired.. I did the games today and Nana is becoming more and more responsive. When I was walking to the barn when I first go there, Nana did stop what she was doin and trot to her buddies, but as i got closer to the barn she kinda slowly walked my direction.. and when i got to the barn doors, she walked right up to me and greeted me!!!! I mean, this is definitely a good sign!!! SHe use to run all the way to her buddies, and I would have to go and catch her.. but today she kinda walked to me!! So i am feelin pretty good, and I think Parelli's methods have somethin to do with her improvment, but I don't want to count my eggs to soon.
Thanks guys for your advice and encouragment
That's great Brandon! Wow, 10 miles, no wonder you're tired!
Image how Nana feels! Keeping my fingers crossed for you Brandon, sounds like things are going well. Keep us posted, very interested in your progress.
well done i love parelli! & thinks its great make sure you keep things interesting, like what everyone has suggested. Once you & your horse understand all the games make sure you mix them all up & use other items along in the games (a small jump, Bend in & out of trees, etc anything just keep it interesting. :)
