how accurate are those height/weight tapes?
hey all,

so a little bit ago i bought a tape that measures height and weight of the horse. it was only 5 bucks. i was curious about my lease horse's height since he didn't seem to be 17.1 hands to me, but a bit shorter. i've ridden horses in the 17 hand range before and could never get on without a mounting block, whereas i have no issue getting on from the ground with this guy.

so i measured him and the tape says 16.1 on the height side. the weight side of the tape said he weighed approx 1200 pounds. for the weight measurement, the tape says to put the tape around the horse's barrel right about where the girth would go. he's a percheron/paint cross, so this weight does seem pretty light. he is a smidgen ribby, but not what i would call underweight by much.

just wondering how accurate these tapes are?

I'd bet they are accurate within a 100# or so. They are best to judge weight gain or loss as they can't take into account an individual horse's bone structure, they only do averages.

I've used weight tapes for years, & an occasion have actually weighed the horses in question also (on a scale) & it was within 5 pounds, so for me it was accurate on a variety of horses/ponies.

I have seen studies done showing that they can vary a couple hundred lbs. Usually light. A quick google search will bring up stories about that.

It seems to be pretty accurate with healthy horses but with minis or ponies I really don't think its accurate enough. I taped my miniature mare at 190 lbs. then took her to a vet and had her weighed officially, and she was actually 225. Not a huuuge difference but enough to make a difference with a 34" tall horse!

It measures my 17H SSH at around 1200 and I know he is actually about 1400. I dont trust them. I use the math methods and cross check them a few ways to get a good average.
