Anyone here care to hear about my 3rd lesson?
I'm beyond excited and I can tell talking to non horsie people in detail about my lesson is actually pointless and quite painful for them...
Anyhow! I had my third lesson and it was so much fun! We walked and practiced reversing at the diagonal , careful not letting the horse cut corners. Then I started some no stirrup work. Walking without stirrups. 2 point walking without stirrup - fun!!
Then I worked on walking him over one pole. Then we trotted over the pole. I started to have problems keeping him straight. He always wants to walk on the side- trainer said my leg strengths were not even.
Tried again and he avoided the pole!! I had to kick really hard with one leg to keep him from moving to the side :(
Finally got it :)
Then I tried posting trot without stirrup , this was hard but not to bad- I used the momentum for the horses bounce to post. Plus the lesson horse was very lazy so even if I squeeze he's not going faster. Now trotting over the pole without stirrup was challenging, I almost lost my balance!!!
My hands were quieter, but I still have a bit of steering wheel habit, just work on that. I also need to keep my heel way down!!!
All in all - not too shabby for a third lesson??

Wow! Good for you! : )
Me third lesson will be this week. I think she said we will start working on posting.
Are you new to riding or are you coming back to it after a break? I'm new. Rode occasionally as a kid, but didnt have my own horse or anything like that.
Sounds like you did a good job and you know what you need to work on. That's good! Keep up the good work
It's great that you remember so much in detail and know what you need to work on. great work!
Well done. It's rather nice having successes, isn't it?
I rode for about a year 15 years ago for maybe once a week, i dont have my own horse either....but I don't remember a thing, I can't remember how to hold the rein (I ride English)
I want to keep writing down what I've done and see my improvements :)
Are all lesson horse this lazy? Or they are just smart and try to get away with not working? I can squeeze my muscle to get them to walk, but he's walking very lazily. I have to give him a good kick left, right left right to keep the pace going.
When I ask for a trot, it's not immediate either. I would kick both legs at the same time, and it's like kick kick kick kick, before he will move. I mean I swing both legs out and kick hard!!
Is there anything else I can do so I don't always have to hear my trainer hell "kick hard, keep him going!!!"
have someone video you, for your reference as a learning tool, and for your amusement a year or two from now.
ask to carry a crop. just having one in your hand, and in view of the hrose, will change his mindset.
Congratulations to OP!
It's so fun to be in the saddle.
Re lesson horses-- in my experience, these horses measure you up as soon as you get on. If they feel your lack of control and leg strength, they'll be like, eh, whatever. When you get stronger and have more contact with the horse, the horse will respond. I thought, gosh, it would be so much easier to carry a crop (I did one lesson, and she got really strong)... But at the end of the day, I'm glad my trainer is making me do it on my own...it's developing my leg muscles and making me a better rider in the long run....
So much to think about!!

Lesson horses have personalities just like every other horse. Some measure you up, and finding you lacking in an area take advantage, some are lazy and others make you work like heck. One reason the riders and horses in my child's lessons are rotated so they always have to be on their toes and they learn how to read the horse as well.
