fly protection

We have TONS of very bitty flies in my area. Bothering not only my horses but me too. Lol! Anyway... I tried couple natural repellents and they didn't seem to be working well for either of my horses (except for first 5 mins or so). Any suggestions/advices on what works best for you, please?

I use Repel-X. I buy the concentrate, mix it myself, then spray it on a washcloth and wipe Christy throughly. It is supposed to last for 2 or 3 days. Usually it does, but the flies are soooo bad this year. I have to wipe her down every day. Doesn't totally stop them, but I usually only see 1 or 2 flies on her, and sometimes they don't bite. If they do bit her, the repelent kills them so at least that one doesn't come back! It works well with goat flies (little tiny flies) house flies, and horse flies. Also works with misquitoes and ticks. You can also spray it on, but I prefer to really wet her coat with the wipeing, it seems to be more effective.

For me, I get out the Off and spray myself.

I think flies need a new name: Mini Vampires!

I had good luck with the spot on products last summer and am trying them again this year. One of the horse's doesn't like the smell (citronella) so is a bit difficult (but she's touchy anyway.) The other new horse will get her first dose today; we'll see how it goes!

RepelX (by farnam products) is my favorite too. I use the refill also, and just refill the bottle that I buy in the beginning of the season. 2 parts solution, 6 parts water. Yeah, I use a bit much for solution on the refill, but it does the trick.

Also, adding garlic to your horses diet is a natural way to relieve flies. The "stink" keeps them away.

I use good ol' OFF with deet for myself :P

Sprays don't work. You need to kill the population. Try that new Tuff Frog product. I think it's www.tufffrog.com. It uses broadcast baits, but inside the tube. it is BRAND NEW, no one has even heard of it...yet!

I tried "Endure" number of people in my area are using. Seems to be working!
