Hoof crack-need help

Hello,

my gelding was running around in our pasture a couple days ago and then I noticed after he stopped running he held his leg up and appeared to be lame in his right rear hoof. I checked it out and he had a crack in his toe that was about an inch. The crack is sideways and veers off to the right. the crack reaches into his sole and is about the same length as the outside crack on his wall. He was bleeding when it happened and I thought it might be an abscess but I don't think so now. He limps around on it but he is getting a little bit better.

Why would he get such a crack from simply running around? How can I treat it?

Thanks

Did you take any pictures? Has it been rather dry lately? Because he was bleeding maybe call the vet just to ask for advice (i.e. wrapping to prevent gunk). Just precautionary stuff. Don't panic, but I'd call and ask about it.

Actually it has been pretty wet. The weather has been crazy and it goes from dry to wet all the time. Could this be another reason why it cracked?

I might be able to get pictures when I clean it again.

You need to post pictures but bleeding is never good. Sounds like he needed a trim bad but he didn't get one so he started to "self trim" and broke off too much. You should have called your farrier the moment you noticed it especially since there was blood.

Hmm, yeah feet can be tricky. Keeping it clean is good, but definitely call. Weather changes used to mess up my boy's feet, so I understand. But whenever blood was involved I called the vet to get advice and then the farrier..although my farrier was amish so I had to drive to ask about it, but none the less, those people will be able to better guide you should you need to do more than clean it. :)
