What to do with my young horse.
so, I have a 14 month old gelding. Hes a dork. He hadn't done anything before I got him and I have now had him three months. You could not catch him, but once caught he would run away, taking his rope with him. he was nervous of everything. You could not even pat him. He now:

Can be caught
Leads at walk
Leads at trot
Moves off pressure
Backs up on command
ties up
Can have his feet picked
Can be bathed
Has had some bombproofing (towels flapping around him, walking over poles, road cones etc)

Next show season I am going hard out at inhand showing with him.

What do I need to do before then? I have my list of what to work on but I feel like Im forgetting something.

So my question is, What else does he need to do in preparation for inhand, and what should I be doing with him before he gets too big. lol. His father is 16.3hh and his mother is 15.2hh. Most of his siblings are big.

Thanks in advance :)

Practice right hand turns and right hand 180s those will make or break you in a show. I would also work with him being able to get him to stand square well, and be able to re-stand square for when he moves (more than likely he will). Other than that I think you're doing a good job

i would pony him next to another horse, it gets them exercise with out putting too much stress on their joints and teaches them to respect the other horses space.

Sounds like you're doing great!

The only thing I would add is getting him to meet other people - my filly was untouched when I got her, and once I got her to trust me, I got friends and family to come and visit and say hi. You don't want him to run away when the judge comes up to him in the ring!

If there are any schooling shows, practices, or anything you could trailer him to where there would be a lot going on, do it. Don't show or participate or anything, just let the horse watch and get used to all the sights and smells and sounds before you take him to the first show.
